On Sunday, the 15th of January, me, Marina and Francisco took a daytrip to Siófok – a small village on the margins of the Lake Balaton – to check out the frozen lake.
It was a very pleasant and well spent day/afternoon! The lake was full with people ice skating and some just walking on it – like us! Fortunately, it was sunny, but still cold! In the meantime, one guy approached us talking in Portuguese! Oh the world is small! We talked with him for a bit and found out that he is now living and working in Budapest, after having done his Erasmus here too!
So, we took the Train in Budapest-Deli station at around 11h30 and got there after 1h30! The way there had some beautiful views of field and small villages covered in snow, just beautiful!
We stayed there for about 4 hours, because it was a Sunday and a lot of things are closed and also because it is a very small village mainly populated in the summer. So we went to the lake and walked on and around it and after that tried to find an open restaurant to eat, which we did, near the train station! After we took a walk around the centre and went back to the lake – the sun was already setting and the sky had a beautiful blue orangy and pinky color!
We took some pictures with my new small tripod set on the ice – it was fun!! – and went back to the train station to take the 17h00 train and get back home to Budapest!
So, if you’re in Budapest and have some extra time in the winter (even in the summer it is so worth it!) you should consider doing a day trip to check out the beautiful views of Lake Balaton!
I leave some technical info to be easier knowing how to get there and how much it costs:
Train From Budapest-Déli Station to Siófok (you can get a return ticket, here you don’t need to choose the time of the train and the ticket is valid to be used within the next 14 days)
Take the subway red line (M2) to get to the Déli train station.
Time 1h30min each way
Cost 5000HUF (around 16€) to go and return (total cost!); 2500HUF (around 8€) for students with valid student ID (50% discount). Here you can check the timetables, costs at the time of your travel and other discounts!
No Domingo, 15 de Janeiro, eu, a Marina e o Francisco fomos passer o dia a Siófok – uma pequena terra nas margens do Lago Balaton – para ver o lago congelado.
Foi uma tarde muito agradável e bem passada! O lago esta cheio de pessoas a fazer patinagem e outras apenas a andar – como nós! Felizmente estava sol, mas, ainda assim, frio! Entretanto um senhor veio falar connosco em português! Como o mundo é pequeno! Falámos com ele por um bocado e descobrimos que ele está a viver e trabalhar em Budapeste, isto depois de já ter por cá feito Erasmus!
Apanhámos o comboio na estação de Budapeste-Déli por volta das 11h30 e chegámos lá 1h30 depois! O caminho até lá proporcionou-nos paisagens de terras cobertas de neve, lindas!
Ficámos em Siófok por, aproximadamente, 4 horas, pois era domingo e a grande maioria das coisas está fechada e, também, porque a vila é muito pequena e é principalmente “utilizada” no Verão. Portanto, quando chegámos fomos até ao lago, andámos lá por cima e fizemos um pequeno passeio pela zona (as vistas do lago são fantásticas!!). De seguida tentámos encontrar um restaurante aberto, para podermos almoçar – o que encontrámos perto da estação de comboios! Entretanto fomos até ao centro, onde demos uma volta e voltámos para o lago – o sol já se estava a pôr e o céu tinha uns tons azuis, alaranjados e rosa fantásticos!
Tirámos algumas fotos com o meu novo mini-tripé apoiado no lado – foi muito divertido!! – e voltámos para a estação para apanhar o comboio das 17h00 e voltar para Budapeste!
Portanto, se estiverem em Budapeste com algum tempo extra, seja Verão seja Inverno, devem considerar fazer uma viagem de 1 dia e ver as paisagens do Lago Balaton (e no Verão fazer um pouco de “praia”!)

Comboio Da estação Budapeste-Déli para Siófok (podem comprar bilhete ida e volta, não se tem que escolher a hora a que se vai ou que se volta para a compra do bilhete, é válido por 14 dias)
Para ir para a estação Déli apanha-se o metro da linha vermelha (M2).
Tempo 1h30min para cada lado
