Google doodle scoring the 115th centennial of the Antikythera Device design is a nod to scientists, astronomers, archeologists and archivists equal.
The tool was found in 1902 among items found from sinking cargo off the Greek island of Antikythera. First published by Greek scientist Valerios Stais, the bronze artifact looked like a gear or wheel.

“That corroded piece of metal turned out to be part of the Antikythera Mechanism, an old-fashioned analog enormous machine,” writes the Google Doodle team on its blog.

According to Google, the Antikythera Mechanism basically was dated around 85 BC, but it is now thought to date earlier, to 150 BC. The tool was used to track planetary conditions and budget lunar and solar eclipses, as well as mapping and ship flying.
