The Challenges of a Mobile/Courier Service in Big Cities

Nowadays, e-commerce is sometimes characterized by a “same-day” Delivery service, which is revolutionary. That is to say you just have to consult the website of the product or service you want to buy, enter your address, pay and get your order the same day, and sometimes in less than 3 hours. Either less than if you will even buy your product in store depending on where you live.

A Very Useful Way

The use of a delivery service when buying a product or service has proven to be very useful. Customers have the opportunity to eat or buy products & services from home, the same way they would consume if they were in town.

This allows them to do something they would like to do and they are not in town. It also offers the possibility of not using vehicles or public transport for shopping. It does not necessarily cost more to get delivered because it avoids transportation costs, as well as parking fees if you own your own vehicle.

In addition, if you do not live close to where you want to consume a product or service, the delivery may be faster than if you go there yourself. We can see more and more deliveries the same day and sometimes in less than 2 or 3 hours.

In the food market, for example, only 8% of people used a delivery service in 2011 compared to 47% in 2018 and a forecast of 58% in 2020 according to a study by McKinsey & Company.

This figure should increase further in the coming years, this service is constantly evolving even if the sale on site will hardly be fully replacable for a number of reasons : a part of the population prefers to try or see things before buying it.

A Very Efficient Way

According to a survey conducted by LesEchos, 89% of users of e-commerce sites want to use the delivery service. But customers are always demanding in terms of speed and reliability. This is why retailers are developing more and more efficient techniques to ensure that parcels are delivered on time and safely.

Alibaba, the giant Chinese brand, has developed a drone delivery mode that has already been successfully tested in Beijing and Shanghai.

Amazon on the other hand is developing quite remarkable techniques : the delivery of parcels directly in the car trunk of the customers, via a smartphone app, the delivery person geolocates the car of the customers, opens the trunk with the help of a digital code and drop the package. This technique is currently available to Amazon Prime members with an Audi.

Boulanger, the famous household appliance brand offers express delivery to its customers from 7 am in the morning for all orders placed before 22h the day before, which allowed them to win in 2014 the e-commerce innovation award of the Fevad.

Conventional delivery methods are still topical, and increasingly efficient, more and more delivery service, especially in London. Whether by scooter, car, truck or bike, the success rate of delivery is very high and conversely, it is rare that a customer does not receive his delivery and late.

Competitive Prices

At the opposite of what many people think, it does not cost more to get your products or services delivered because you will not use your vehicles or you will not pay for transportation. The perfect example is LeSalon, it is a beauty salon that comes to your home, you just need to enter your address, the type of service you want, pay, and someone will come to restore you a beauty, at the time you want. The advantage is that they exercise prices similar to classic beauty salons.

In conclusion, the delivery is constantly evolving and improving from day to day, now faster, safer and at an equal price, it is difficult to dispense with such a service. Even if some prefer to go directly to the store to try or simply try their shopping, more than 80% of people should use this service in the next 5 years.
