In a quest to dominate the smartphone industry, smartphone makers are trying to be less dependent on others & try to develop their own components.Apple & Samsung are ones who jumped onto the bandwagon early, leaving Qualcommm processors behind.Of course, both of them were very successful in implementing optimised performance with the new processors.
Since then,it was wondered why its counterpart,Xiaomi was keeping quiet & still using Qualcomm Snapdragon. To be honest,Xiaomi started off smartphone business by launching Mediatek based phones & later shifted to Snapdragon for more powerful devices. The company still sells Mediatek based phones in China, but in India & other markets-the Snapdragon variants are being sold.
In the beginning to December 2016,it was rumoured that Xiaomi was busy working with its own processor architecture,it was only in Jan 2017 that things began to get more clear. An in-house processor would mean that they have greater control over the supply chain & product cycles. It can help them to optimise the devices with much better performance & battery life.
Amidst the rumours Xiaomi officially announced that the Chip will be called ‘Pinecone’.The details of the processor points out that Pinecone 1(V670) will be a lower-mid range processor, possibly comparable to Mediatek processors.
Update:The chipset was named Surge S1,as opposed to the rumour that it will be named Pinecone.
Here’s the architecture of the Xiaomi Surge S1 (Source:MIUI Forum)
Surge S1
CPU: 4 x Cortex A53 @ 2.2GHz + 4 x Cortex A53 @ 1.5GHz
GPU: ARM Mali-T860 MP4 @800MHz
The chipset would be engineered at SMIC Corporation using a 28nm fabrication process.
The chip has an upgradable baseband feature which helps to add telecom features using OTA updates.
The Mi 5c launched with the Surge S1 inside.
Surge S2 (flagship grade processor reportedly launching in Q4 2017)
CPU:4 x Cortex A73 @ 2.7GHz + 4 x Cortex A53 @ 2.0GHz
GPU:Mali-G71 MP12 @ 900MHz
The S2 shall be manufactured using 10nm fabrication process(Yes,you read that right!) & will be launched at the end of 2017,as per news reports.
Here’s the scores of different processors compared to Surge S1 on Antutu Benchmark.
It’s clearly visible that it beats Snapdragon 625 in terms of performance.
The processor was unveiled at Beijing International Convention Center on Feb 28th.
