In a world that has the internet, even the largest companies on the planet are finding it hard to keep their secrets to themselves. Almost every smartphone launched in the past few years had all their specifications already leaked months before their official launch. If this Geekbench listing is legitimate, then this might be our first look at the Galaxy S9 series.

As per the latest Geekbench listing, a device named Samsung SM-G9650 was spotted running Android 7.1.2. The processor mentioned for the device is a Qualcomm quad-core processor running at a clock speed of 1.78 GHz. The motherboard of the device is mentioned to be “sdm845” while the RAM capacity is 3740 MB. Taking the Model Number into consideration, the device seems to be the next Samsung flagship under the S series.

The Galaxy S8 was launched a few months back, the Galaxy Note 8 is yet to be launched in a couple of months, so we might sound insane while talking about the Galaxy S9, which, if we go by the Samsung launch schedule, should be launched in about seven months from now. You just need to read on to know why the listed device could be the Galaxy S9+.

If you have followed the model numbers of Samsung Android smartphones then you will definitely spot a pattern in them. The Galaxy S8 launched this year, for example, comes with a model number SM-G9500, while the larger Galaxy S8+ has a model number SM-G9550. Similarly, the Galaxy S7 came with a model number SM-G9300 and SM-G9350 for the S7 Edge. This pattern can also be spotted in the model number of the phone listed on Geekbench, which indicates a successor to the Galaxy S8+.

You might argue that the listed device could the Galaxy Note 8, which also hasn’t been announced yet. But the thing is, the Note series has always sported a model number with an ‘N’ instead of ‘G’ that is in the said model number, like model number SM-N9300 for the Galaxy Note 7. Moreover, the Galaxy Note 8 is already rumoured to come with a model number SM-N950. So, the argument is overruled!

And if the possibility of a mini variant of the Galaxy S8 is concerned, that also isn’t possible, and again the model number is to be blamed. If you look at the last mini variant that a Samsung flagship got was the Galaxy S5. The Galaxy S5 Mini had a model number SM-G800, while the full-sized Galaxy S5 had SM-G900 as its model number. If Samsung continues to use the same nomenclature, the Galaxy S8 Mini should have a model number SM-G8500, which isn’t the case here.

Not only this, another Geekbench listing was also spotted yesterday that mentioned a model number SM-G9600 with very similar specifications to the today’s listing. It has a Qualcomm quad-core processor, clocked at 1.77 GHz along with a RAM of 3742 MB. The motherboard mentioned here is “sdm840”. With both the model numbers in hand, the SM-G9600 seems to be the Galaxy S9, while the SM-G9650 should be the Galaxy S9+.

There isn’t much detail available about the Snapdragon 840 processor. It is believed to be a modified version of the Snapdragon 820 with a better GPU and mode. Some of the reports have already revealed that the Snapdragon 845 would be the successor to the current Snapdragon 835 processor. Not much detail about the two is available as of now.

Of course, it is too early to confirm anything about the devices that still have months before their launch. Samsung might have started working on the 2018 flagship and they should be in their early development stage. As the year advances, we should get more details about the two devices.
