Introducing Urbee 2, a Revolutionary Prototype Car

3D Printing has traveled many places in the short time that it has been around, but in a couple of years, 3D printing can travel anywhere thanks to the Urbee 2. Entrepreneurs Cody and Tyler Kor will attempt to drive from one coast in the United States to the other in their Urbee 2, a prototype car made almost entirely by 3D printing. The trip will involve a New York to San Francisco joyride where they will refuel once they get to the coast and then turn around to do it all again. The Urbee 2 looks like a bean and gets hundreds of miles to the gallon, pretty remarkable stuff! If all goes according to plan, the Kor’s 3D printed prototype car will be the first to drive across the country.

Kor was able to divulge the plans for the Urbee 2 at the Stratasys hosted event, Manufacturing the Future Summit. Many technology fans attended the conference to discuss the latest and greatest in the 3D printing industry and where the future of the industry is likely headed. As one of the most exciting featured speakers, Jim Kor, the father of the boys and the brains behind the project, took to the platform to discuss the incredible future of the Urbee 2. The key to getting such incredible miles to the gallon lies in the lightweight construction of the Urbee 2 and therefore really lends itself to 3D printing for manufacturing.

Take a look at the video below for a better idea of what the Urbee 2 will be in couple short years:

Safety is the inevitable hurdle that the Kor men and the Urbee 2 will have to overcome. However, they are already looking to overcome the potential issues that the DOT and the NHSTA will present. “In many states and many countries, Urbee will be technically registered as a motorcycle,” Jim goes on to say, “Our goal with the final production Urbee,” Kor says, “is to exceed most, if not all, current automotive safety standards.” We look forward to the future of driving as 3D printing continues to involve itself in more and more industries.
