As you might have heard, Microsoft is making Windows 10 available as a free upgrade for compatible devices running Windows 7 or newer, until July 29, 2016.

You might be wondering, “What will I gain by upgrading to Windows 10?” Well, for starters:

• Windows 10 will receive “mainstream support” from Microsoft until October 13, 2020, and “extended support” until October 14, 2025. Compare this with Windows 7’s end of extended support, which is set to expire April 11, 2017. In short, if you want to keep receiving security patches/updates from Microsoft on a regular basis after the next few years, you’ll need to upgrade to Windows 10.
• Windows 10 offers increased performance compared to Windows 7/8/8.1, featuring a new “Fast Startup” mode and other performance enhancements.
• Windows 10 also offers an enhanced Start menu, which is more akin to the one in Windows 7, with the addition of features like live tiles and an improved interface. You’ll also find a re-vamped Windows Store, giving you access to new apps/games/software.
• Cortana, Microsoft’s new virtual assistant, is likewise included in Windows 10. Cortana functions much like Apple’s “Siri” or Google’s virtual assistant on Android phones, allowing you to open apps, access app features, search for information, and more, via voice commands.
• Windows 10 also introduces something called “virtual desktops”, which allow you to group program windows into their own desktop space. This is especially useful for multitasking and working on two/more projects at once, while keeping open documents/windows in the context of their own desktop environment. You’ll also find an enhanced version of the Windows “snap” view feature, allowing you to easily snap program windows to one/more sides of the screen.
• The Windows 10 “Action Center” offers convenient access to common functions/settings, as well as a centralized place for apps to show you notifications.
