MGM stops production Metro 2033 film

production of the Metro 2033 film has been discontinued. This would get the same story as the first book, on which the first Metro game is based. Both the author and film producer MGM seem to have concluded that the story of Metro does not work in an American setting.

In an interview with VG24 / 7 , author Dmitry Glukhovsky reports that he now has the rights to the film again. MGM received the film rights in 2012, two years after the release of the Metro 2033 game. Script writer F. Scott Frazier wanted the story to play out in Washington DC’s subway system. The big problem was, according to Glukhovsky, that certain situations and themes from the book are very specific to the setting in Moscow. In addition, the author was afraid that the story would become ‘too generic’ and, according to him, certain things simply did not work in the city of Washington.

“They were somewhat afraid of choosing Moscow as a setting, because Americans have the reputation that they only like stories about America, but Metro Last Light and Metro 2033, the books and games, have sold millions of copies worldwide. It is therefore not inconceivable that people want to see a story with a setting in Moscow, partly because this is a unique sales element, we have seen the American version of the end of the world so often and the public who love this genre do not want to even more of the same, “says Glukhovsky in an explanation of his view that a Metro movie can be better located in Moscow.

The author is currently in discussion with other producers. Which producers are, is not yet known. On 22 February, Metro Exodus will be released for Windows, the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One.
