How to Call Forward

Forwarding calls from one Phone to another is easy and convenient. Learning how to call forward means you can get your phone calls, even when you are away from your home phone. Most landlines utilize a touchpad code to trigger the call forwarding process. In some cases, you might be able to access call forwarding remotely. This means you will be able to forward the incoming calls to your home phone even when you are away. For example, if you take a daytrip and decide at the last minute to stay overnight, you can call into your home phone and have the incoming calls forwarded to your overnight location.

To set up call forwarding, make sure it is an option on your phone. Your telephone service provider can enroll you in a call forwarding program if it is not already available with your calling plan.

Once the feature is on your phone, you can activate call forwarding by using the touchpad on your phone. The code is usually *72 for most service providers. Press the three-button code and then dial the number you want your calls forwarded to. You might have to wait for a recorded activation prompt. Once the call is answered, your forwarding has been activated. You might receive a recorded confirmation or your voicemail might pick up. If you get a busy signal, just try the process a second time.

To ensure the forwarding process worked, call your home number. If your cell phone voice mail or someone at the forwarded number picks up, you know that it has worked properly. Your home phone should ring once before the call is rerouted to the alternate number.

You can unforward your call by dialing out from the line with the code *73. To test that the calls are now being routed to your home phone, place a call to the landline. You can also wait until a call comes in, as long as you are able to access the phone to which the calls were forwarded. Otherwise, if the unforwarding did not work, you might miss a call.

It is possible to call forward from online phone systems such as Yahoo Voice, Skype, or VOIP. You will need to follow the directions provided by your particular online service.

Keep in mind call forwarding and remote call forwarding are typically pay services. Some service providers offer forwarding as part of a benefit package, but you need to make sure there are no limits on the service. Once enrolled, you are usually able to forward unlimited calls to any other phone, but it is important to confirm this before using the service. This will avoid unexpected charges on your phone bill.

Call forwarding is a great way to make sure you do not miss any calls. Most people carry cell phones with them nowadays, but you have no way of knowing if someone is trying to reach your home landline. If you have more than one telephone, you can forward calls to one line instead of missing the calls when you are on the go.
