Battle of Digital Personal Assistants – Blending Siri with Cortana

The battle of the AIs has been an age old topic. Every major corporation in the field or IT innovation is slowly rolling out a personal digital Assistant. Whether it is the Google Assistant by Google, Cortana by Windows, Siri by Apple, or Alexa by Amazon; each one of them is trying to outdo the other in the advancement of their AI.

So far, Alexa practically owns the entire market share when it comes to connecting multiple devices to create a Smart Home or Smart Ecosystem. Google Assistant may still be in its nascent stage with a lot of catching up to do. So who gets the second place? Siri? Cortana? Let’s find out!

Siri

Siri was one of the first virtual assistants to be noticed. She worked effortlessly on the iOS, and her witty responses made her an internet sensation. But why has she not developed any further? In the present scenario, she seems comparable to what she was six years ago when she was announced. The problem with the evolution of Siri stems from the fact Apple is not comparable to its competitors when it comes to offering cloud services. Furthermore, it is neither a consumer nor a commercial cloud service. All digital personal assistants make use of cloud-intensive technologies, and Apple cannot offer that, thereby, restricting Siri’s growth. Apple’s stubbornness with not forming partnerships, especially for a reliable cloud service, may ring the death knell for Siri.

Cortana

Windows 10 mobiles failed miserably in the commercial markets. However, everyone was all praise for Cortana, the Personal Digital Assistant that was the saving grace for the device. This is because Microsoft really put in some elbow grease in setting up Cortana. Microsoft can very well comprehend the usage of cloud technologies and makes use of Azure/365, which happens to be the most efficient consumer and commercial cloud service. It is beefed up with back-end services like big data, analytics, and machine learning. Thus, Cortana turns out to be much more robust than Siri with an ample margin for evolution. However, Cortana is still to see the growth that Siri has seen.

Both the virtual assistants have their advantages and shortcomings. The best way for either virtual assistant would be to form a partnership. Microsoft has what Apple lacks, while Apple has what Microsoft needs. Therefore, a long term partnership between both the firms may make the Siri/Cortana potent enough to challenge the likes of Alexa.
