Speed Up Your Internet Connection

Speed Up Your Internet Connection

Internet Service Providers provide free routers along with their Connection. However, these routers only provide the most basic features. Most of the time, you are not able to maximize your Internet speeds. You can speed up your internet connection just by using the right Router. In this article, I’ll be discussing different specifications and features of different routers to fit your need.

What is a router?

A router is a piece of computer hardware that connects networks together. Through a router, your computer can connect to the Internet or to other computers. A router will also allow your tablet or phone to connect via Wi-Fi to the World Wide Web. Nowadays, almost all homes and businesses will have a router for their connectivity needs.

There are a lot of available choices on the market. One major factor you should consider is to maximize and speed up your internet connection. Although it might be a bit confusing, there is a router out there for your specific requirements and budget. Here are the specifications to look for, and what they exactly mean for the average users.

Speed up your internet connection by knowing these things:

Wi-Fi Standard

To speed up your internet connection, knowing the Wi-Fi standard of your router is important. The newest standard available on the market today is 802.11ac. The more common ones having the 802.11n support functionality. The 802.11ac standard allows for up to 1.3Gbps. Meanwhile, the 802.11n can transfer up to half that.

Routers like the ASUS AC1900, which has 802.11ac standard support allows for amazing transfer speeds. This is great for those who loves streaming. Especially for those who have multiple devices sharing a single network. This device will handle all your heavy usage.

However, the downside of this is that only a few phones and tablets currently support this new technology. Also, it’s a bit pricey as compared to those with only 802.11n support. If you’re looking for a router with only 802.11n support, I recommend the unassuming but very impressive NETGEAR N600 which costs a hundred dollars less.

Antenna Range

Routers emit signals which, if your devices’ own signals reach them, would then establish a connection. Some routers may provide high range specifications. However, getting the optimal connection isn’t easy due to multiple factors. There are interference in the form of overlapping networks, physical walls, or electrical appliances.

There are networks with large spaces with multiple walls and blockades. I believe having cables running throughout the area as well as having additional routers is the way to go. Furthermore, purchasing a signal booster like the OptiCover NEWEST 2018 WiFI Extender is a good move. This helps boost your signal by multiple meters in all directions wirelessly.

Another option is to strengthen your antenna’s range by upgrading your router’s existing antenna. Products such as TECHTOO 9dBi Omni Antenna is a good replacement. There are also routers that allows you to add additional antennas. An example of this would be the D-Link AC3200 Ultra Tri-Band. The higher the dBi and the more antennas that you have, the better the range of your router. This gives a better chance that your router would reach your computers and other devices wirelessly.

Frequency

There are two main standards for routers in the market today, namely 2.4GHz and 5GHz. The 5GHz frequency band is a much faster frequency than the other. However, it is only best for connecting devices and other networks in a shorter range.  Meanwhile, the 2.4GHz is better for more basic uses like looking at your Facebook page or checking emails. Even though 2.4GHz is a slower frequency, it has better range and can pass through walls.

There are those that combine both frequencies like the NETGEAR Orbi Home. This product will give you the best of both worlds. Dual-band or even tri-band routers like the NETGEAR AC4000 provides multiple frequencies so that you can connect devices as needed if you want to take advantage of each band depending on your needs.

Other Features

One feature that you can look into routers is the number of ports that it has. Extremely important if you are in need of wired connectivity. The TP-Link AC1900 for example, has eight Ethernet ports. This will allow devices to connect via this protocol and would not have to rely on Wi-Fi anymore. Another additional feature of this product is the inclusion of USB ports which allows for direct printer or NAS connectivity.

Other features include Bluetooth or audio connectivity as well as custom network management and monitoring. One such example of the latter is the NETGEAR AC1750. Their NETGEAR Genie App allows for parental controls and filtering of content that can be viewed by connected guests.

Conclusion

Knowing where you will set up your network and how many devices will be connected is one of the most important detail. Furthermore, what each device or network they will be used for, will play a big role so that you can choose the right router that will be perfect for your needs.

Routers may seem to be a complicated matter, but it can be quite easy if you know what to look for. Understanding what you need can help speed up your internet connection easily.  There are different products that you can choose from, with specifications that can fit into your network requirements and budgetary constraints.
