Dodge Challenger hybrid confirmed to rival the Mustang

Today the Dodge Challenger is all about the supercharged V8, but that’s about to change. If you like it or not, electric cars are the future and that’s why the next-generation Challenger will ditch its gas guzzling, supercharged V8 for a hybrid powertrain.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CEO Mike Manley has revealed that the next step for the Dodge Challenger is a hybrid.

“The reality is those platforms and that technology we used does need to move on. They can’t exist as you get into the middle-2020s,” Manley recently stated at the Detroit Auto Show. “New technology is going to drive a load of weight out, so we can think of the powertrains in a different way. And we can use electrification to really supplement those vehicles.”

While Manley didn’t really provide too many details about what will power the next-generation Challenger, an electrified powertrain is definitely in the works. “I think that electrification will certainly be part of the formula that says what is American muscle in the future,” Manley continued. “What it isn’t going to be is a V-8, supercharged, 700-horsepower engine.”

The Dodge Challenger Hybrid isn’t going to be the only electrified muscle car, since Ford has also confirmed a Mustang Hybrid is coming soon too.
