2021 Ford Mustang to share its platform with the new Explorer

Ford hasn’t revealed any bit details about the next-generation Ford Mustang, but according to some recent reports, we’re now learning that the new Mustang will share its platform with the 2020 Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator.

Sources revealed the details to Ford Authority, which claim that the 2021 Ford Mustang will use the same CD6 platform as the Explorer and Aviator SUVs. The CD6 platform is very versatile, since it can be used for various applications, including front-, rear- or all-wheel drive setups. The next Mustang, codenamed “S650” will get the rear-wheel drive configuration with a longitudinal powertrain.

Reports also claim that Ford will use more aluminum for the next Mustang to help it drop a few pounds, while the 5.0L Coyote V8 will likely get some updates. A turbocharged four-cylinder will continue to be offered, which will also be the basis for the upcoming Mustang Hybrid.

Stay tuned.
