Facebook Is Using Instagram to Track Your Location History

Following on the resignation of Instagram‘s co-founders last month — amid a rumored feud with Mark Zuckerberg — the latest development of the platform has been revealed. According to one user, a new setting allows Facebook to build up a user’s Location History data through Instagram.

The setting description explains that it applies to both Instagram and Messenger, meaning that Facebook can gather data from users who do not visit the main app. As it stands, the feature defaults to off, meaning that it could be an opt-in feature for the time being. This kind of development makes sense with Adam Mosseri now heading up Instagram. After working on the Facebook news feed, Mosseri is believed to be planning greater integration between the platforms.

Facebook released a statement to Techcrunch regarding the rumored update, announcing that it hasn’t introduced updates to our location settings: “as you know, we often work on ideas that may evolve over time or ultimately not be tested or released. Instagram does not currently store Location History; we’ll keep people updated with any changes to our location settings in the future.”

In other tech news, the Nintendo Switch 2 could be releasing next year.
