How to use Virtual Desktops in Windows 10 | WindroidInsider

Virtual Desktops are a known feature to Linux and Mac users. Microsoft finally added it in Windows 10. Virtual Desktops come as a built-in feature of Windows 10. Now, users can add virtual desktops to split screens and organize desktops.

In this article, we will look at the ways on how to use virtual desktops in windows 10. Here are some of the operation that can be performed on virtual desktops.

How to access virtual desktops?


This feature is known as "Task View" in Windows and can be accessed easily from the taskbar. The icon for the Task View is two overlapping rectangles present next to windows button. Clicking on the button takes the user to the task view main screen where the user can perform actions such as adding, switching or removing desktops.

Using Windows Key + Tab keys can also be used to access the Task View screen.





How to add a new desktop

Adding a new desktop is pretty simple. Once you reach the task view screen, hover your mouse to the bottom right corner of the screen. There you will find a button labeled " Add a new desktop" with a "+" sign above it. Pressing it will generate a new desktop. To switch to new desktop simply click on the new desktop.

Use Windows Key + Ctrl + D to create a new desktop directly from the keyboard.



How to switch between virtual desktops

To switch between virtual desktops in Windows 10, just go to the task view pane. Once on the task view pane, choose between the active desktops.

Use Windows + Ctrl +Left Arrow Key and Windows + Ctrl + Right Arrow Key to switch between active virtual desktops in Windows. 



How to move programs between virtual desktops

To move any active window to another desktop, first, go to Task View pane. Now, right click on the active program which will be shown in the middle of the screen. Hover the mouse to "Move" option. A new menu will appear showing the list of desktops available. Choose the desktop you want to send the program to.

You can also drag the application or program from task view and drop it into another desktop.



How to close virtual desktop

To close any virtual desktop, simply hover over to the list of active desktops. On the desktop's thumbnail, in the upper right corner an 'X' button appears. Clicking that 'X' button will close the desktop.
Using Windows Key + Ctrl +F4 key will close the current desktop you are on.
