Hey Whats up guys welcome to Sid Tech and today I have the Redmi 5 2GB RAM + 16GB storage variant with me in black color. In this article, let’s unbox it and have first look. So without much further ado lets get started.
Unboxing
So this is the retail unit that I have bought from Amazon.in for Rs7,999. It comes in the usual red Redmi series box and you can see some important specs at the back. Now let’s cut the seal and see what we have got inside. Opening up the box you get another box which contains the transparent back silicon cover.
Which is good as finding covers for Xiaomi devices is not that easy especially for devices which have just launched. Going down further we have the phone itself in this black color, it is also available in Gold, Blue, and Rose gold color variants but sadly only black and gold variants were available at the first sale.
Other than this we have the usual reading material which no one reads, a micro USB cable for charging and data syncing, a USB wall charger with 5V at 2amp and lastly a sim ejector tool.
Design
First of all, it is covered with protective film both at the front and back, let’s remove it and have a physical overview. At the front on top, we have the 5-megapixel front-facing camera capable of shooting full HD videos, along with the earpiece and a led selfie light for better low light performance.
below that we have a 5.7 inch IPS LCD 18:9 aspect ratio display with gorilla glass protection top. This is a 1440 x 720px resolution display which is not the best but having an 18:9 display at this price is great. There is nothing on the bottom bezel as it comes with on-screen navigation keys and a rear placed fingerprint scanner which is working well.
Speaking about the rear side, we have the 12-megapixel camera at the back with f/2.2 aperture and a led light just below it along with the fingerprint scanner. going down further we have the Mi branding. Coming to the bottom we have a micro USB port sandwiched between the two grills, out of which one is the primary microphone and other is the speaker grill.
On the right is the power button along with the volume rockers. At the top, we have the 3.5mm headphone jack, IR blaster, and a secondary noise cancellation mic. over to the left, we have the hybrid sim card tray in which you can have either two sim card or a sim card and a microSD card. Overall the smartphone is well built with rounded corners with makes it easier to hold in hand.
Specifications
The Redmi 5 runs on Android 7.0 Nougat with MIUI 9 on top. Android Oreo would have been better but with MIUI 9 it hardly makes a difference as it comes with all the typical MIUI 9 features like dual apps, a new dashboard to the left of the home screen and more. It runs on an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 processor clocked at 1.8Ghz coupled with Adreno 506 GPU.
Xiaomi claims that games like Asphalt 8 work well on the smartphone, we will test that out in our gaming review. It will also be interesting to see how well this phone performs with 2GB of RAM. Battery life is one of the strongest points of Redmi smartphones, let’s see how long Redmi 5 lasts on its 3300mAh battery as Xiaomi claims that it could easily last you a day.
Turning on the camera app you find all the usual modes on a Xiaomi smartphone along with a stripped down version of the manual or pro mode. let see how useful is that led selfie light and how is the overall performance.
