For as long as we can remember, Logitech has been in the PC-peripheral game. The MX Master 2S precision mouse is the culmination of 35-years of Logitech experience.

From the early days of mechanical mice, to trackballs, Logitech has stood for the edge of innovation. Though not everything can be considered success stories however, each creation has honed Logitech’s craft further. The MX Master 2S is no exception and is maybe the most complete mouse there is.

Design

The 2S is the second generation MX Master. Its predecessor saw the light of the world in 2015 and not much has happened in terms of design. The mouse is featuring the same ergonomic grip with a curvature for the thumb and easy access to 7 special buttons and side-scroll wheel. Speaking of which, the defining feature of the original MX Master was the adjustable speed of the main scroll-wheel. This feature is of course present on the 2S, allowing you to seamlessly go from high-speed to inch-by-inch scrolling through a simple button press. Scrolling through large documents is mind-bogglingly fast with the infinite high-speed scroll mode.

The main buttons are large but not excessively so. We enjoy their quiet yet distinct sound. Though, the striking distance of the large buttons is a tad shallow. The thumb-rest itself is yet another button that can be programmed. By holding it down and swiping the mouse sideways you can easily switch between desktops in macOS for example. The previous MX Master didn’t have touch buttons and this mouse is lacking them as well. Teflon feet make sure the mouse slides along well but we do recommend using a mouse mat to not wear them out prematurely. At 145 grams, some may consider it heavy but the configurability more than makes up for it. The mouse features an off-switch and channel switcher underneath. Above the thumb-rest we find three charge-indicator lights.

Features

The mouse features 7 programmable buttons. Logitech Options is what the company calls the software controlling not only the MXs, but all current peripherals. Since it has an interactive view of your installed accessories, picking buttons to reprogram is a breeze! The software also allows you to make application-specific settings. Useful for the PC-pros out there that need to switch configuration instantly.

The channel switcher underneath the mouse allows you to seamlessly switch between up to three devices. With a 500mAh battery, Logitech states the mouse has 70 days of power which is 30 days longer than the original MX! Though, our previous MX Master stopped short of just 7 days of use after a year of moderate operation. Thankfully, a 1-year warranty gallantly saved us from going nuts by replacing the faulty unit. It should be noted though that batteries can actually be replaced by the user!

Flow

Performance

In gaming scenarios, refresh rate is everything. The MX Master 2S may be aimed at a broader pro-audience but it’s no slowpoke either. Its standard setting is 60 Hz at 1000 dpi and scalable from 200-4000 dpi (previously 400-1600 dpi). This makes the mouse on par with most gaming mice out there. True gamers would argue that the mouse suffers from latency due to being wireless. (There is nothing that stops you from using the mouse with a cable though). The mouse connects via Bluetooth 4.0 Smart. PCs lacking Smart-technology have to deal with Logitech’s Unifying receiver. Just stick this inconspicuous piece into one vacant USB-port and you can connect up to 6 peripherals through it wirelessly! If you’re a laptop user, you’d likely appreciate not sacrificing a USB-port because of your wireless mouse, right? If so, make sure your computer supports Bluetooth Smart! Charging the mouse while using it is of course possible (shame on you, Magic Mouse 2).

In a day-to-day user scenario, the mouse performs well. The adjustable scroll-wheel is really perfect for scrolling, panning and zooming large documents. Both wheels combined are equally fit for finding your way around photos and illustrations in Adobe’s programs. We’ve noticed that when we left-click sometimes the click wasn’t registered. This may be a software bug or whatever but it’s annoying. For a gamer, this would be catastrophic. To be fair, we’ve been using the mouse with an Early 2011 MacBook Pro via the Unifying receiver. Electromagnetic interference can also be partly to blame. The mouse is intended to use with Bluetooth and we have yet to see how well it performs using that. What we seriously think it’s lacking is a carrying pouch. Heck, most people in need of a wireless mouse tend to have a mobile lifestyle. Being able to safely carry the mouse around in your bag should be a minimum. The somewhat odd design makes it hard to find 3rd-party cases too…

Summary

So, is the Logitech MX Master 2S worth USD $99.99? Yes, and no. It’s totally worth it if you’re a programmer, designer, photographer, writer or all-of-the-above. However, a gamer would probably prefer a mouse that puts more focus on ergonomics, less on being all-round. We’re not saying gaming mice aren’t customizable. However, a gamer wouldn’t want to accidentally push in a key that in turn activates a macro, unleashing their baddest move prematurely. This is unfortunately what could happen with the 2S. In trying to cater to all, 7 buttons have been generously sprinkled onto this piece. We’re addicted to the adjustable scroll-wheel though. It’s super-fast and perfect if you, like us, writes a lot of articles and need to skim through lots of source material. Buy it if you’re anything but a gamer. Though, if you’re not too picky about refresh rates, using it with a cable isn’t half-bad either.
