V-learning in medical science

Unlike other professions, for Medical professionals, it is much more important to stay updated with the new technologies to enhance their knowledge on a regular basis. One of the ways of doing so is through video-based learning which has become very popular in the healthcare sector. In most countries, health care professionals are required by law to take several course credits every year in order to maintain their status as active practitioners. Mainly because this is one sector where best practices keep on evolving after every few years. Healthcare professionals also face another challenge. They are often too busy that it’s problematic for them to find time for training, especially for those whose roles in the hospital or clinic are often invaluable and cannot easily take time off of work to attend a training course.

V-learning does away with all those problems. Here’s how
• It enables them to take up a course at their own pace. It is remote, so they can follow lessons from their office or home.
• It is extremely costly to equip the classrooms with state-of-the-art educational tools. That is where V-learning helps as it’s more effective than traditional instructions.
• With V-learning it is easy, and cost-effective, to incorporate interactive and multimedia capabilities to the training courses especially in the healthcare industry, where images and figures play an extremely important role like organ structure, x-rays and ECGs, etc.
• Besides core medical training, V-learning can be used to train doctors and healthcare personnel in the use of new medical equipment and the presentation and education about new drugs.
• Since medicine is purely a knowledge based profession where new developments are constant, and time being a very scarce resource, e-learning can have a tremendous impact on the cost,

convenience, time saved, reliability and accountability of your training. Not only healthcare professionals, but the government and independent organisations can also leverage V-learning systems to provide health information to the public, from disease awareness to dietary and lifestyle advice. The US government, for example, is running the Healthy People eLearning website, an online educational resource designed to help students and health professionals meet the country’s health goals, while the European Union has several e-health programs like IROHLA. Clinical simulations In the medical field, clinical simulations are often used to teach or provide additional training. These simulations focus on the learner’s experience to solve problems, perform skills and make determinations. It has been proved by various studies that simulations can result in increased confidence and better clinical judgment. Innovative learning tools like 3D and 2D virtual worlds have enhanced professional training experiences in the medical field. Virtual environments provide a robust, interactive and attractive educational context that reinforces experiential learning. It encourages active participation unlike the traditional learning methods which are based on passive learning. And when a student is given the freedom to move and engage in selfdirected activities, he incorporates knowledge more effectively. Also, there are situations where real life experience are considered dangerous or risks injury to the patient, in such cases, simulation can effectively serve as an alternative. We can say that e-learning and the medical sector go hand in hand as the benefits from elearning approaches are not just related to cost savings, but also to increased efficiency, convenience, and reach. Also, virtual learning strategies based on simulation are effective methods for enhancing critical core competencies. This is possible, however if we have a faculty which is adept with technical resources, strategic thinking and planning that is required to create interactive learning scenarios that appeals to the medical professionals.
