7 Electric Skateboard Companies that Pissed Off Redditers

Ever since electric skateboards became a thing, there’s been story after story of companies who sought funding via crowdfunding sites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo only to end up pissing people off by failing to deliver as promised.

Now while most of these cases, while not total scams, are definitely questionable to say the least. The common complaints from those who backed these products via crowdfunding sites are that the company isn’t actually located where they say (usually they end up being Chinese companies), they are selling a re-branded version of a previously known crap board, they don’t meet their deadlines, they don’t provide updates or any communication at all, and the product specs don’t add up upon scrutiny.

You may be thinking to yourself, “Duh, what’d these people expect? Who invests in a product they’ve never test-ridden or seen or verified to be real in any way?”

This is a good question and many riders and users on Reddit are coming to that conclusion. The current opinions of most Redditers these days seems to be you’re foolish for backing an electric skateboard before it ships. Most people have realized that after the boards ship (usually after major delays), there’s usually a large group of people annoyed by how shitty the boards are once received, so they turn and sell them online for cheap. Many riders are now waiting to buy these barely-used boards for a fraction of the cost opposed to going through the headaches of dealing with shady companies via kickstarter comments and email.

To help you avoid unpleasant experiences with any of the companies known to disappoint, we’ve assembled a brief list of the Electric Skateboard Companies pissing off Redditers the most.

Electric Skateboard Scams? What Redditers Have to Say

Leafboard

Many Redditers cancelled their pre-orders a few months back, due to suspicions of fraudulent claims and the company’s supposed history of fraud.

The general consensus is that Leaf Board is a Chinese company that “over-promises and under-delivers.”

In the comments on their Kickstarter page, you can find numerous users complaining about unmet deliveries and delays as well.

Xtnd

This Xtnd electric skateboard has been met with strong skepticism over its listed weight and other specifications. Given the motor wattage, speed, and range, many find the listed weight of 3kg unbelievable. Many users argue that this company is listing the board without the battery weight included, which would be a misleading. But other major players such as Inboard have pulled this move in the past and received little backlash, so we may be witnessing a new precedent.

Other users have also voiced skepticism over the quality of the “AI” this board supposedly possesses. Many technical-minded folk find the description provided on the kickstarter page, where they say state the board gathers intelligence on how you ride and creates unique settings for your style. While this may be possible, they give little technical support for how, and users have expressed concern over how this would work, given people rarely encounter the exact same surface multiple times.

Lou Board

The Lou Board complaints tend to gripe about a lack of updates and overall communication, as well as unmet shipping deadlines. This is understandably annoying if you’ve pledged money for a product and the company who should be delivering it goes off the grid.

Many people are angered that the only updates they’ve received over the delays have come from an independent vlogger who claims to be “friends with one of the guys” at the company. Check out their Kickstarter comments to see more complaints.

Ivory Board

The overwhelming consensus here is that the Ivory Board is simply the Onan electric skateboard strapped onto a bamboo deck, re-branded, and re-launched via Kickstarter.

This has understandably pissed some people off. But the company can apparently get away with receiving funding for an already existent product because they added a few new lights and other garnish toppings.

While this company is not a scam and will likely deliver their boards, the lack of transparency about the re-branding has angered many early pledgers.

Marbel

Marbel has been causing uproar for over a year in regards to lies over their return policy, delayed shipping coupled with lies, unmet deadlines, and taking payments and not delivering products.

There is even one irate Redditer attempting to rally the troops for a class action lawsuit against the company. Ouch!

Stary

Stary is another board that’s been pissing people off for quite some time. There are numerous Reddit reports of bad quality, breakdowns after a few days, and unmet deadlines for delivery without communication from the company.

Seven months ago, someone claiming to be a disgruntled employee wrote a post detailing how the company was in debt and experiencing issues with deadlines and product. This post came after weeks of silence in the face of numerous complaints over the missed deadlines.

Bolt Motion

Bolt Motion is another company who received many complaints over long shipping delays and lack of communication.

Take a stroll over to their Kickstarter comment section and you’ll see a lot of people asking about the CEO, “Where is Lorenzo?” and people complaining about ignored emails and lack of response from the company.
