Bang & Olufsen is in the business of crafting some of the most visually striking speakers, that also carry a high price tag. That’s why the company’s range is often popular with the installation community, although the BeoLab 50 is slightly different. While it’s built using much of the same technology found in Bang & Olufsen’s flagship, the BeoLab 90, features a more understated design, as well as a lower price tag.

While the design isn’t as eccentric as the one offered on the BeoLab 90, those buying the speaker will still find it hard to complain about the aesthetics. Bang & Olufsen has included some pretty swish touches, including a hidden three-fourths-inch tweeter that rises out of the speaker when it’s turned on. The company calls this its ‘Acoustic Lens’. The entire speaker is also clad in aluminium and oak wood, which Bang & Olufsen customers will likely recognise.

In terms of hardware, the BeoLab 50 packs a total of 2,100W of power, which is delivered through seven drivers. That includes three 10in woofers, three 4in midrange drivers, and a single 0.74in tweeter; all paired to seven 300W amplifiers. That’s noticeably less powerful than the BeoLab 90, which packs 8,200W of power and 18 drivers.

Despite the gap in power and number of drivers, users will find much of the same technology present in both speakers. That includes Bang & Olufsen’s Active Room Compensation technology, which uses an external microphone to measure its acoustic surroundings and then deliver optimum sound.

As the speakers come as a pair they can be linked up in a master-slave configuration to source wired audio directly. That means the master speaker handles all the connections, whether through digital optical, USB, RCA or S/P-DIF. Each speaker also features WiSA technology for high-res wireless connectivity.

As expected, Bang & Olufsen’s BeoLab 50 is a high-end product with a high price tag to match. In the UK consumers can pick up a pair for £22,930, while in the US pricing has been set at $37,710. That’s significantly more affordable than the flagship BeoLab 90, which is available as a single unit at £58,820.
