Nvidia Shield TV Gains 4K Casting

The Nvidia Shield TV is already one of the best options for watching 4K movies and TV shows, although it lacked one crucial feature – 4K casting support. Now, Nvidia is officially ready to roll-out an update which will allow users to cast 4K content directly from their phones, allowing the Nvidia Shield TV to go directly head-to-head with Google’s Chromecast Ultra.

When it comes to high-powered set-top boxes, the Nvidia Shield TV is the most powerful of them all. That’s why it is the ideal 4K viewing and gaming machine. Despite the powerful innards, however, there is still a distinct lack of apps that support 4K content. The apps supporting 4K on the Nvidia Shield TV include: YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Video, Google Play Movies & TV, Google Photos, Vudu, Plex, Kodi and Vimeo.

Casting 4K content is a slightly different picture to simply playing it, as many of those 4K apps don’t support casting from mobile devices. One app in particular that lacks Google Chromecast support is Amazon Video, which has thus far resisted any support for casting. It doesn’t look like that will change anytime soon either.

Nvidia has yet to confirm when 4K casting support will be rolled out to its set-top box.
