Robert’s Pick: When it comes to sheer creativity, few can match Goichi Suda. Best known by his nickname, Suda51, the Nagano native paved his own idiosyncratic path in the industry, originally earning attention for a surprisingly bleak scenario in Super Fire Pro Wrestling III. In the ensuring years, he’d go on to form Grasshopper Manufacture a studio responsible for a string of quirky titles like Killer7, No More Heroes, and Killer is Dead. This week’s release of The Silver Case is the studio’s inaugural title, and reveals many of the themes that Suda would later revisit. Sure, it’s an eighteen-year old visual novel with a narrative that’s often strategically nebulous. But if you’re a fan of J-game history, you owe it to yourself to experience this wonderfully off-beat, media-mixing crime procedural.
