Detroit Red Wings focus on defensemen, centers in crucial draft - Mlive

In 1989, the Detroit Red Wings left the draft table with a pair of players, Nicklas Lidstrom and Sergei Fedorov, who would go on to experience Hall of Fame careers, and a high-impact defenseman, Vladimir Konstantinov, whose career was cut short due to a debilitating injury from a limousine accident.

That doesn’t even include their top two picks, Mike Sillinger, who played more than 1,000 games for a dozen teams, and Bob Boughner, who appeared in 630 games, none for Detroit. Also taken that year was Dallas Drake, who capped a career that included 1,000 games by lifting the Stanley Cup in 2008.

The draft had a profound impact on the Red Wings’ success for the next two decades.

This weekend the Red Wings have 11 selections in what could be their most important draft since that epic day 29 years ago.

That includes the No. 6 pick, their highest choice since 1990, as well as picks 30, 33 and 36.

“As an organization and staff, we’re excited because we’re going to get four for sure high picks,” Tyler Wright, the Red Wings’ director of amateur scouting, said. “We’ll have four guys in the first two rounds we think will be really good and then you add three thirds and two sixths, other picks. We’ve got to continue to add to this mix in what we’ve determined to be a pretty deep draft in a lot of positions.”
