SPL Power Rankings, Week 2: Ittihad Display Qualities Of A Title Winning Side

Image courtesy of Abdullah Al Muharrab. 1 Continued to stay perfect. Nice job. LAST WEEK: 1 HIGH: 1 | LOW: – Latest result: Won at Al Fateh 1-0 Next SPL match: Away at Al Shabab (18/09) 2 Huge win after missed penalties from both teams and somehow the dawry Jameel league sees them up there. GK Abdullah Al-Mayoof was a hero with that marvelous double save from the penalty, but now they’ve got to get goals from the front line. LAST WEEK: 2 HIGH: 2 | LOW: 2 Latest result: Won at Al Taawoun 2-0Next SPL match: Home against Al Ettifaq (16/09) 3 Another 3-2 victory. Credit goes to Itti newbie Villanueva for his playmaker like abilities in the first two goals, and credit to Jose Luis Pando for preaching aggressive football even when on the road. And if you are planning to win the title, you have to win games like these. LAST WEEK: 3 HIGH: 3 | LOW: 3 Latest result: Won at Al Batin 3-2Next SPL match: Away at Al Wehda (18/09) 4 Hard done by the harsh red earlier in the game, but guess the ensuing missed penalty was what they required to bounce back. And bounce back they did. Could have taken the lead – but like Al Raed, we assume Al Faisaly will be working on their finishes too. LAST WEEK: 5HIGH: 4 | LOW: 5 Latest result: Draw at Al Qadasiya 1-1 Next SPL match: Home against Al Fateh (17/09) 5 Massive jump in the Rankings this week. Do we reward them for creating a billion chances or punish them for missing so many? Manager Nacif Beyaoui must be fuming at Ismael Bangoura’s finishing. We know, we would be. Yet, finished off the game thanks to a few lucky events. LAST WEEK: 10HIGH: 5 | LOW: 10 Latest result: Won against Al Wehda 3-1Next SPL match: Away at Al Taawoun (16/09) 6 Probably one of the worst performances we have seen from the Al Nassr squad and its captain Hussein Azouz Ghani. Oh wait — only two games have been played so far. LAST WEEK: 4HIGH: 4 | LOW: 6 Latest result: Lost at Al Ettifaq 0-1Next SPL match: Home against Al Qadasiya (17/09) 7 Shocking win not only for the result, but for how methodically they were able to pick Al Shabab apart. This might as could be up there in the upsets of the season. LAST WEEK: 12HIGH: 7 | LOW: 12 Latest result: Won against Al Shabab 1-0Next SPL match: Away at Al Khaleej (16/09) 8 A huge round of applause to the fighting spirit of the Ettifaqi’s and their goal tender – Ahmed AL KASSAR – we shall call him the wall from now on. Another game to be added to the top upsets of the season. LAST WEEK: 14HIGH: 8 | LOW: 14 Latest result: Won against Al Nassr 1-0Next SPL match: Away at Al Hilal (16/09) 9 Was not the same team that we had witnessed last week. If it wasn’t for GK Abdullah Alsdairy’s heroics, the difference in the scoreline could have been larger. Unfortunately, Alsdairy’s heroics was tainted by that horrible judgement which led to second goal. LAST WEEK: 6HIGH: 6 | LOW: 9 Latest result: Lost at Al Raed 1-3Next SPL match: Home against Al Ittihad (18/09) 10 We talked about keeping an eye out for Patrick Eze’s last week. Showed us why in the 12th minute. His ability to finish with pressure looming is just beautiful. Yet, with one man up for the majority of the game, Qadsiya were not able to close off the game. LAST WEEK: 8HIGH: 8 | LOW: 10 Latest result: Draw at Al Faisaly 1-1Next SPL match: Away at Al Nassr (17/09) 11 Actually created a few opportunities, but it always felt like they were going to lose the game. Maybe it should have been 1-1 as they hit the post once, but then it could be 2-1 because their opponents did as well but either way, it’s more of the same for Al Shabab fans. LAST WEEK: 7HIGH: 7 | LOW: 11 Latest result: Lost at Al Batin 0-1Next SPL match: Home against Al Ahli (18/09) 12 Just been two games, so there’s no need to panic for the team who finished 4th last season, yet. But it’s clear Al Taawon are missing the offensive prowess of someone like Paul Alo’o Efoulou – remember him? LAST WEEK: 9 HIGH: 9 | LOW: 12 Latest result: Lost against Al Hilal 0-2Next SPL match: Home against Al Raed (16/09) 13 The Power Rankings feels your pain, my Khaleeji friends. The best thing to do is take heart that you were able to take the lead and eventually squander it against a top side which is in form. LAST WEEK: 11HIGH: 11 | LOW: 13 Latest result: Lost against Al Ittihad 2-3Next SPL match: Home against Al Batin (16/09) 14 Just a lot of questions, even if they looked absolutely menacing last season. The formation remains a mystery – especially with several guys looking out of their depth. LAST WEEK: 13HIGH: 13 | LOW: 14 Latest result: Lost at Al Wehda 2-3Next SPL match: Home against Al Ahli (20/08) PS: “LAST WEEK” is based on the standings at the end of 15/16 season.
