SPL Power Rankings, Week 3: Ittihad Jump To Top Position

1 An 8 goal thriller characterised by the 4 scored by Egyptian Mahmoud Kahraba and the win was dedicated to their ex-President Ahmed Masoud who passed away recently. Cannot let go off that strike of a lifetime – that 1st goal from Kahraba. Deservedly handed the top slot this week. However, weakness in handling crosses is something that many teams will look to capitalise on. هدف #الاتحاد الأول في مرمى #الوحدة عن طريق "محمود عبدالمنعم" د15#الوحدة_الاتحاد#برو_سبورت pic.twitter.com/cqQqsSKMrW — MBC PRO SPORTS (@MBCProSports) September 18, 2016 LAST WEEK: 3 HIGH: 1 | LOW: 3 Latest result: Won at Al Wehda 5-3Next SPL match: Away at Al Ahli (23/09) 2 The new face — Paraguayan midfielder Victor Ayala had some catching up to do to find his place in the center of the pitch — and catch up he did with the only goal of the game, but the real test for Croation boss Mamic’s side will be how quickly the central midfield jells. Regardless, surely Nasrawi’s are enjoying what they see. LAST WEEK: 6HIGH: 2 | LOW: 6 Latest result: Won against Al Qadasiya 1-0Next SPL match: Home against Al Khaleej (22/09) 3 Clearly coach José Manuel Gomes post-match interview showed his views on the game “In the second half, we started playing after the first two goals. I cannot accept this.” And as usual, Omar Al Somah did his best to lift the team with a brace but that was not enough. Perhaps, good to be humbled? LAST WEEK: 1 HIGH: 1 | LOW: 3 Latest result: Lost at Al Shabab 2-3 Next SPL match: Home against Al Ittihad (23/09) 4 Massive move up this week. Three points away from home is always a good thing. Three points away at Al Hilal is just magnificent. Six back-to-back points beating two of the top four teams brings the club and its fan to a state of euphoria. LAST WEEK: 8HIGH: 8 | LOW: 14 Latest result: Won at Al Hilal 2-1Next SPL match: Home against Al Batin (21/09) 5 The sa’aroukh from Nawaf Al Abid was sick but that was it for the night from Al Hilal. All eyes were then to turn towards King Fahd International Stadium again as Al Ahli paid a visit to Al Shabab. LAST WEEK: 2 HIGH: 2 | LOW: 5 Latest result: Lost against Al Ettifaq 1-2Next SPL match: Away at Al Qadasiya (22/09) 6 A win was needed for Sami Al Jaber and what better way to do it than at home against league champions. Mohamed Benyettou with his hat-trick made up for all that he missed in the first two games. Redemption must be sweet for Al Shabab. LAST WEEK: 11HIGH: 6 | LOW: 11 Latest result: Won against Al Ahli 3-2Next SPL match: Home against Al Taawon (23/09) 7 Still hard to figure out exactly what kind of team Faisaly will be, though it’s pretty clear that “opportunistic” will be in there somewhere. Have laid down the right foundations in the first three games. LAST WEEK: 4HIGH: 4 | LOW: 7 Latest result: Draw at Al Fateh 0-0 Next SPL match: Home against Al Wehda (23/09) 8 Oh man, these guys perform better when things are unexpected. Was their 1st goal straight from the training pitch? Because Soltan Ghneman was open on goal but unintentionally unselfishly headed it back to Jandson. Then there was the I-will-just-lift-my-head-and-see-what-happens ET equalizer by Faisal Al Zafiri. Just crazy but the club continues its good run. LAST WEEK: 7HIGH: 7 | LOW: 12 Latest result: Draw at Al Khaleej 2-2Next SPL match: Away at Al Ettifaq (21/09) 9 All that magic on display in the 2nd round vs. Al Wehda dried up on the road at Al Taawon. It was surprising to see them with so few ideas but lucky to come away with just two instead of 5+ if it wasn’t for the horrible finishing of their opponents on display. LAST WEEK: 5HIGH: 5 | LOW: 10 Latest result: Lost at Al Taawon 1-2Next SPL match: Home against Al Fateh (22/09) 10 Was an open ended game for both teams but broke the deadlock after showing some creativity in breaking the stringent defense. 3 points at home resulting in their first win of the season should raise their motivation levels. One thing is certain – Coach Kalezić will have to concentrate a little bit more on the finishing of this offensive players. LAST WEEK: 12 HIGH: 9 | LOW: 12 Latest result: Won against Al Raed 2-1Next SPL match: Away at Al Shabab (23/09) 11 Al Wehda put in a good fight, however could not stop the onslaught. Could have been worse. In the end, they could still claim that that they lost by 2 in the high scoring game. LAST WEEK: 9HIGH: 6 | LOW: 11 Latest result: Lost against Al Ittihad 3-5Next SPL match: Away at Al Faisaly (23/09) 12 Showed glimpse of their capabilities especially in the visually pleasing set-up and the goal by Talal Majrashi. But then squandered due to poor defending in the 90th minute. It hurts. LAST WEEK: 13HIGH: 11 | LOW: 13 Latest result: Draw against Al Batin 2-2Next SPL match: Away at Al Nassr (22/09) 13 There just didn’t seem to be anything Qadsiyah could do to win a game – a major concern since the new squad was supposed to be more pragmatic than previous offerings. Yet, there is time to prove us wrong otherwise. LAST WEEK: 10HIGH: 8 | LOW: 13 Latest result: Lost at Al Nassr 0-1Next SPL match: Home against Al Hilal (22/09) 14 Al Fateh fans will be disappointed – scratch that – should be furious given they should have been 2 – 0 10 minutes after kick-off. Power Rankings is surprised how this team managed to finish in fifth last season. Yes, we are. LAST WEEK: 13HIGH: 13 | LOW: 14 Latest result: Draw at Al Faisaly 0-0Next SPL match: Away at Al Raed (22/08)
