5 reasons why Lacazette is great for Arsenal

The wait is finally over. The announcement has been made, Lacazette is a Lyon man no more, he is a Gooner. This is no ordinary signing, this is our record signing, almost a decade in the making since our scouts have been watching him as a 16 year old. After the season from hell this is a step in the right direction is the kind of signing we have needed for years now. Here’s a few reasons why this is a special signing:

Wenger finally adding depth to the squad and doing business early

I don’t know what it is, whether it was all the protests, or the board demanding change from Wenger. We have seen in recent years Wenger having only adding players only if he absolutely has to, like when all our centre backs had to get injured for him to get Mustafi, or when he decided not to sign a single outfield player in 2015. Yes, he added depth when he bought Alexis and Ozil, but those were over 3 years ago and have been the exception not the rule. Wenger adding depth to the squad and doing it this early in the window is almost unprecedented in recent years, and hopefully this is a sign that he means business. Hopefully Lacazette isn’t a replacement for an outgoing Alexis Sanchez, in which case it is one step forward and two steps back.

The best is yet to come and he’s proven himself already

Lacazette is 26 years of age and is about to hit his peak years. If all goes well and he stays fit he will bang in the goals for us like Ian Wright did. He has an excellent conversion rate scoring on average from every third shot and even though he will need time to get used to the rigours of the Premier League he scored 37 goals last season, 23 the season before that and 31 the season before that. As he reaches his peak years there’s reason to be optimistic.

He’s a bargain

Yes he is our record signing, but look at the current market. To get a striker that is even half decent you are looking at a minimum of £40m. You only need to look at our pursuit of Mbappe to realise the prices strikers are going for now. Lukaku has been quoted at £75m for Manchester United as another example with Morata a similar price. Here we have a proven striker, not someone young and with potential, with respect to someone like Mbappe which we have snapped up for £52m. With the size the club has grown in terms of revenue in the last couple of decades or so a price like this for what you’re getting isn’t much at all.

He’s a penalty taker

With Cazorla eternally on the treatment table we have struggled to find a regular penalty taker. Yes Alexis has stepped up, but only recently has he been putting them away consistently and even for example against Bayern he still struggles and had to rely on the rebound. Lacazette has been clinical from the spot during his time at Lyon and his finishing from the spot will be just as important his finishing from the spot.

He’s ideal for Mesut Ozil

This is both exciting and frustrating at the same time. It has been 4 years since we signed this magical playmaker but in the 4 years he hasn’t had the right type of striker to complement him. It was like getting a brilliant artist for your song but with terrible sound equipment. Mesut Ozil works best with pacy strikers, which is why he did so well with Cristiano Ronaldo in front of him and does well with the Germany national team. This isn’t to say he hasn’t done well so far for Arsenal, but it hasn’t been ideal, with due respect to Giroud. With Lacazette in the fold, expect to see goals and a sharp rise to form for Mesut Ozil as well.
