The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup run for the Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC is over.
At Highmark Stadium, Pittsburgh hosted FC Cincinnati, a fellow USL club. However, Pittsburgh, despite the 3-1 loss in the Open Cup match, remains undefeated in league play.
Their Open Cup record features another loss, though.
Jimmy McLaughlin scored the opening goal for FC Cincinnati in the 39′ minute. Emery Welshman recorded the assist.
After the match, Riverhounds SC Head Coach Bob Lilley said his side “fell asleep” on the first goal.
“It was a long ball that wasn’t challenged and had a runner off of it,” Lilley said. “We were ball watching and a guy slipped in behind us. We had the numbers, we just didn’t react to the play.”
The next slew of goals didn’t come until the second half.
Cincinnati scored two back-to-back goals in the 61′ and 62′ minutes. Lance Laing recorded the first of the two goals, while Daniel Haber finished the second goal, scoring past Riverhounds SC goalkeeper Dan Lynd.
Pittsburgh didn’t get on the board until the 88′ minute. Dennis Chin scored his first goal in a Riverhounds SC uniform Wednesday night.
After the match, Chin admitted it’s been “rough” missing matches due to injury.
“I’ve never had that in my career, so it’s good to get my first minutes,” Chin said. “I would have loved to have gotten a win out of it, but a goal is good to go by.”
Chin also said that recovering from an ankle injury was mentally tough.
“I am usually involved everywhere I have been,” Chin said. “It has been good to get a different aspect of the game and support your team. I have to stay the path, take some time and get back where I need to be.”
After the loss, the club will rebound with league play against in-state rival Penn FC. Part of the Keystone Derby Cup, Pittsburgh and Penn FC drew 0-0 in the Hounds home-opener.
“Our focus goes right back on to the league and continuing to show that we are a top team,” Lilley said. “This won’t affect us the next time we play Cincinnati. No one is going to go through the entire league season unbeaten.”
Saturday’s match against Penn FC will be held at Highmark Stadium.
Kick off is slated for 7 p.m.
