Riverhounds sign goalkeeper Brenden Alfery

A familiar face is coming back to Pittsburgh.

The Pittsburgh Riverhounds have announced the signing of Goalkeeper Brenden Alfery for the remainder of the 2017 season.

Alfery joined the Riverhounds for his rookie year last season. He never made a regular season appearance, however, as he was behind Hunter Gilstrap and Mauricio Vargas on the depth chart.

Now, he joins Matt Perrella, as Alex Kapp has returned to Minnesota United FC, where he was on loan from.

The Riverhounds have lost goalkeepers Trey Mitchell and Keasel Broome to respective season-ending injuries. The losses, as well as potential injury scares to Perrella, have resulted in head coach Dave Brandt bringing back Alfery.

“Brenden has trained with us for the past week and has shown very well,” Brandt said. “His game minutes in NPSL this summer I think have matured him even more as a goalkeeper and he has always been a very athletic and excellent shot stopper. With season-ending injuries to both [Keasel Broome and Trey Mitchell], we are fortunate to have in Brenden a keeper who is fit, healthy in form, and already having had experience with our organization”

Alfery has spent the majority of the summer with the Fort Pitt Regiment of the NPSL.

Before signing last season with the Riverhounds, Alfery appeared for Robert Morris University and Grove City College.

The Riverhounds will be traveling to New York to face the Rochester Rhinos on Saturday. The Riverhounds currently sit in 10th place in the USL’s Eastern Conference with 34 points. The team holding the eighth place seed – which is the final playoff spot – is Orlando City B, with 36 points.

Rochester sits in third place with 42 points.
