CeleBreak Barcelona World Cup
When you think about the World Cup, what is your defining memory? Every football fan has one that springs to mind. As a kid, whose early years had been spent tottering around with a ball always at my feet, my iconic moment came during the 1998 World Cup, as I watched on with awe as an 18-year-old Michael Owen tore through the midfield and defence with ease in a match against Argentina (YouTube Link: 1998 World Cup – Michael Owen Goal) before calmly rifling the ball into the top corner of the net and wheeling away in celebration.
In this moment, as the net was still rippling, I knew that my dream was to be the next Michael Owen, and that, one day, I too wanted to pull on the white of England and stride out onto the World Cup stage… Unfortunately for me, however, as I was growing up, the limits of my footballing ability led me to only being able to don my England jersey while playing football at the park after school with my friends – and I’m sure I wasn’t the only one!
If you were one of those kids who is still holding out hope for the phone call from the head coach of your national team, then wait no longer! This is your call-up; your country needs you in Barcelona on 5th June for The CeleBreak Barcelona World Cup!
Barcelona is famous throughout the world not only for the footballing successes of its renowned, favourite club team FC Barcelona, but also for being one of Europe’s most cosmopolitan cities; a truly astounding melting pot of people from an enormous array of cultures, origins and nationalities that combine to create the city’s unique atmosphere. As a result, we thought what better way to welcome in the Summer than to give all the footballers from around the world that live here the chance to face off to see which nation is the king of the Barcelona Amateur Football scene!
If you’re planning on accepting the call up, on Monday 5th June – a public holiday in Barcelona – gather a team of players of your own nationality and come down and join us at our beachside field, Agapito Fernández (Avinguda Litoral 85), to soak up the sun and to represent your country with honour! Many Nations already have captains, so please get in touch with us and you can join up with your compatriots, and if your country doesn’t have an established captain, then why not throw your hat into the ring and wear the armband with pride!
The format of the tournament is 7-a-side football, with each team guaranteed a minimum of 3 matches, which last 20 minutes each. The cost of entry is 135€ per team, and the prize for the winners is a full set of individualised Nike jerseys! If possible, please make sure to wear the jerseys of your home country!! In true CeleBreak style, there will be an Official Afterparty for everyone involved in the tournament, details of which we will be releasing closer to the time. We hope to see you on the field and to see you do your country proud!
