AP stands for Advanced Placement Program. This program allows high School students to take college-level courses and earn credits while still at school. Taking APs demonstrates high academic motivation and learning potential—skills that translate into success at the college level and beyond. AP classes are managed by the College Board which conducts the SAT as well. Each AP course ends with a college-level exam and is scored on a scale of 1-5, with 1 being the lowest and 5 being the highest.

Credits earned through AP courses can help students skip introductory courses and graduate early, sometimes by nearly a year, so that they can do internships and on-campus jobs to gain valuable work experience. An AP score of 3 is considered to be qualifying and credit-worthy. An AP score of 5 in three subjects can really help your profile stand out among your peers during the admissions process and can even help you win AP Scholar Award.

In India, AP exams are offered in 24 subjects. They are administered at authorized schools and test centers. Take a look at a comprehensive list of schools in India that facilitate AP exams. Schools that opt not to administer AP exams can refer students to other schools or testing centers. AP exams are generally held in the first two weeks of May worldwide and scores are available in July. Registrations open in February-March. Check out AP exam schedule for 2019.

A student can choose to take as many APs as he or she wishes, but one cannot retake a particular exam in the same year. One can retake it in the subsequent year in order to improve one’s score. If your school does not offer AP preparation course, you can take online classes or go the self-study way. The choice of subjects depends upon the stream that you want to graduate in. For example, if you wish to pursue Electronics Engineering, it makes sense to take AP Physics, Calculus AB and Calculus BC. Likewise if you are interested in Economics, you can choose to take AP Microeconomics, AP Macroeconomics and AP Statistics. Talk to your counsellor if you are unsure which AP exams you should take.
