Huskers four errors fatal in defeat

Penn State walked off with a win Thursday night defeating Nebraska 8-7. Nebraska had four errors and Chad Luensmann had a blowup in the ninth for the Huskers.

Nebraska jumped out in the first Inning thanks to the return of Jake Meyers. Meyers led off the game with a home run pulled to left field for his first of the season to give the Huskers an early lead.

Jake Hohensee would take the mound in the bottom half of the inning and looked shaky. A single, stolen base, and a second single tied the game for Penn State. Willie Burger would then launch a two run shot over the fence to put Penn State up 3-1.

Nebraska would hit a lull in the early part, only able to muster a walk in each of the next three innings. While the offense struggled, Hohensee went on cruise control, shutting down the Nittany Lions in each of the next three innings.

The offense got clicking in the fifth thanks to Mojo Hagge. With one out, Hagge started a rally with a triple to the gap in right. Meyers would pick up his second hit of the night to score Hagge and cut the lead to one. After Angelo Altavilla singled, Scott Schreiber would strikeout to bring up Ben Miller with two outs. Miller pulled a ball into right to tie the game.

After stranding a man at second in the top half of the sixth, Penn State regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning. Back to back doubles from Conlin Hughes and Braxton Giavedoni put the Lions back up. With Giavedoni on third and one out, Robbie Palkert would relive Hohensee and would get a groundout and strikeout to end the frame.

Nebraska once again managed to tie the game in the seventh. Meyers walked to start the inning and then moved to third when Altavilla singled. After a wild pitch, Schreiber plated Meyers with a grounder to shortstop. Miller and Alvarado would be unable to bring Altavilla around from second to keep the contest tied.

Palkert would work around a two out hit batter to keep the Lions scoreless in the ninth to bring up the Husker bats in the eighth.

Jesse Wilkening started the eighth inning with a double down the right field line. After a grounder and a strikeout, Meyers would walk to bring up Altavilla. Angelo doubled down the right field line and would score when Schreiber singled to put the Huskers up 7-4.

Penn State got a run in the eighth when Miller could not field a ball cleanly with two outs. With a two run lead, Luensmann would get a grounder to end the inning.

After going 1-2-3 in the ninth, the Husker defense blew up in the bottom half of the inning. A leadoff walk, and then a double play ball botched by Altavilla at third gave the Lions the tying runs on base. A double would plate one, with an out being made at the plate. After a grounder to Jake Schleppenbach for the second out of the inning, another error on Miller tied the game. A double plated a run, handing the Huskers a bad loss.

Nebraska falls to 32-18-1 (14-6-1 Big Ten) while Penn State improves to 18-35 (4-18 Big Ten). Nebraska and Penn State resume the three game series tomorrow night with first pitch scheduled for 5:30
