Barcelona confirms they would rename their new training stadium after Johan Cruyff

Dutch legendary footballer and manager Johan Cruyff died of lung cancer last year aged 68. The football icon is seen as many as the godfather of the modern football played by Barcelona.

He signed for the Catalans in 1973 from Ajax, helping them to their first league title in 14 years. And as a coach, he also guided them to their first European Cup in 1992. His success was tied to his ‘total football’ philosophy that has lived on till today.

Barcelona to rename training ground stadium after Johan Cruyff

The club has announced the various ways he is going to be immortalized. And they include, building a statue, renaming the future stadium in the Ciutat Esportiva Training Complex, dedicating a section int he museum to him, and renaming a street within the vicinity of the Camp Nou.

​Barcelona released a statement read: “First of all, the future stadium in the Ciutat Esportiva Training complex is to be named the ‘Estadi Johan Cruyff’.

“Therefore, the most emblematic building in the facility where future Barça players are coached is to be named after somebody who played such a central role in fostering youth talent at the club.”

Speaking at the presentation, Barcelona president, Josep Bartomue said: ‘Cruyff broke down barriers, he was the man who made us lift our heads up and see that nothing is impossible.
