Giants sign fullback Elijhaa Penny, place Jon Halapio on IR

Second-year man played full season last year with Arizona Cardinals

The New York Giants have officially announced the signing of Fullback Elijhaa Penny off the Arizona Cardinals practice squad. In a corresponding roster move, the Giants are placing center Jon Halapio on IR after he suffered a broken ankle Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys.

Fullback Shane Smith missed two critical blocks while playing only four offensive snaps on Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys. For now, however, Smith remains on the roster.

Penny, a 6-foot-1, 234-pound 25-year-old who played collegiately at Idaho, played in all 16 games for the Arizona Cardinals in 2017 after making the team as an undrafted free agent. He carried the ball 31 times for 124 yards (4.0 yards per carry) and caught 4 passes for 38 yards.

Per Pro Football Focus, Penny had a 75.7 pass-blocking grade and a 67.0 run-blocking grade in 2017.

In 13 games with the Giants, Smith has neither carried nor caught the ball.

The move leaves the Giants with two fullbacks and only eight offensive linemen on the roster. For now.
