Giants news, 2/12: Darrell Bevell for offensive coordinator?

The search continues

Good morning, New York Giants fans! The Giants’ hunt for an Offensive Coordinator is story/issues/soap opera of the moment, so let’s get right into that.

The Giants, as far as we know, have filled all of their assistant coaching slots with the exceptions of quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator. Shurmur may have been hoping to hire Minnesota Vikings quarterbacks coach Kein Stefanski for both roles, but over the weekend the Vikings denied the Giants permission to interview Stefanski. Then, the Indianapolis Colts hired Frank Reich as head coach. That may impact the availability of the two men considered leading candidates as of now, ex-Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell and Philadelphia Eagles running backs coach Duce Staley.

There was a glimmer of potential good news for the Giants late Sunday, though. The Colts have asked for and received permission to interview Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver coach Nick Sirianni for offensive coordinator. The Chargers reportedly expect Sirianni to get the job.

That, of course, would mean that the Giants would be free to hire Bevell if that is the direction in which they want to go.

Are there other possibilities beyond Bevell and Staley, should the Eagles allow the Giants to interview him? Of course. ESPN’s Jordan Ranaan name-dropped a few.

Baker Mayfield to Cleveland Browns?

With the Browns having hired former Washington Redskins GM Scot McCloughan as a draft consultant Baker Mayfield could become their quarterback target in the 2018 NFL Draft. The Browns have the Nos. 1 and 4 picks. The Giants have the No. 2 pick, and are also thought to be considering a quarterback. Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com explains why Mayfield might be atop Cleveland’s list:

The Browns’ new draft consultant, who’s participating in draft meetings all week at the Browns’ facility in Berea, still has Mayfield at the head of the 2018 QB class -- even with his Heisman Trophy-winning season well in the rearview mirror, according to a radio interview in Denver on Jan. 18. In the same interview, the former Redskins GM revealed that he doesn’t see Washington quarterback Kirk Cousins, the headliner in free agency, as special. ...

On the Cecil & Pritchard show on 104.3 The Fan, McCloughan reiterated that he’d take Mayfield over a field that includes Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen and Josh Allen. He also repeated that Mayfield reminds him of Brett Favre, with whom he spent six years in Green Bay.

”I was lucky enough to have been around Favre, and I’ve gotten to know Baker pretty well just by watching him,” McCloughan said, via The Washington Post. “There’s some off-field stuff, but nothing too hairy. College kids are college kids. It’s not like he’s doing anything really bad.” ...

Cabot writes “It’s significant, because Dorsey trusts McCloughan and hired him to help out with this pivotal draft.”
