90-Man Roster Preview: OL Brett Jones A Capable Backup

Question is, will he ever be more than that?

Every NFL team needs a reliable Backup center, and that is the primary role that Brett Jones fills for the New York Giants. Can he become more than that, though? Let’s take a closer look at Jones as we continue our player-by-player profiles of the Giants’ 90-man roster.

2016 Season In Review

Last season has to be considered a missed opportunity for Jones. The Giants turned to Jones to start at left guard when Justin Pugh went down with a knee injury. Pugh ultimately missed five games, and that would have given Jones an extended chance to perhaps put himself in line for a starting job in 2017. Unfortunately, Jones lasted only eight snaps before suffering an injury of his own and being forced to the sideline. He played only eight snaps the rest of the season.

2017 Season Outlook

Jones is destined to be exactly what he was for the Giants last year — the backup center and an emergency fill-in at guard. The former Canadian Football League lineman is a smart guy and looked like a capable player in the limited snaps he got last season. If he is ever going to be more than a backup, though, he needs to take advantage when he gets another opportunity.
