Memphis opens up on ‘really tough’ time under Jose Mourinho

Memphis Depay regrets that he wasn’t given an opportunity to impress in his second season at Manchester United.

Depay left the club in January to move to Lyon, although United inserted a buy-back clause into the deal.

The Dutchman had joined from PSV in summer 2015 and struggled to establish himself in his first season under Louis van Gaal.

When his compatriot was removed as manager in summer 2016 to make way for Jose Mourinho, Depay hoped to be handed more opportunities, but he played just eight times before he was sold.

“In the first season, I didn’t contribute enough,” Memphis told L’Equipe.

“But I really believe you need a year to succeed in the Premier League, it’s the fastest league in the world. The second, I had my self-belief back, but I didn’t play.

“It’s then that you look at yourself in the mirror and you ask yourself a lot of questions: ‘Am I not good enough?’

“It was really tough. To stay positive, you have to be very strong mentally. That experience made me grow up and is useful to me today.”
