So About Those Justin Fields Rumors...

The question has been out there since before Justin Fields actually took the Field for the University of Georgia. How could the UGA coaching staff keep both Jake Fromm and Justin Fields happy? Would Fields transfer if he was unable to unseat Fromm?

We still don’t know the answer to that question. What we do know is that in the past few hours rumors have mushroomed that Fields is at least considering a transfer, with ESPN’s Mark Schlabach citing Florida State, Ohio State, and Oklahoma as potential destinations.

From the sound of things, Fields and his family haven’t come to a decision. But honestly you’d have to be shocked if Fields wasn’t at least thinking about his options. Jake Fromm came into this season as the starter in Athens and finished the season with the third highest quarterback rating among FBS signal callers. He’s potentially got two more seasons of eligibility. Fields, for all his obvious gifts, is playing from behind in this quarterback derby.

Right now, the biggest part of his legacy in red and black is an ill-executed fake punt. And one could make the argument that has less to do with Fields’ skill and preparation and more to do with how he was used and/or misused, especially early in the season. Justin Fields’ freshman season went pretty well objectively speaking. He saw action in twelve games, completing 27 of 39 passes for over 300 yards and four touchdowns. That’s not bad

I don’t know if Justin Fields will elect to transfer. I do know that if he weren’t at least considering it he could squash the rumors with a single tweet, text, or phone call. He has not done so, which is a good indicator that there’s a chance.

But Fields also was at practice today, which is an equally good indicator that he hasn’t made up his mind. I’m not sure what exactly Kirby Smart and Jim Chaney would need to tell him to get him to stay, or if there is anything they could say that would do the trick. Talk is cheap. Snaps are precious.

I also know that, at a certain point, the questions about whether or not Fields is going to transfer are going to become a bona fide distraction. If Jake Fromm emerges from spring practice as the starter, these rumors will kick off again. And every time Fields doesn’t play significant snaps in 2019 we’ll likely be right back here. In short, these rumors end when Justin Fields supplants Jake Fromm or transfers, and not before. I think the latter is more likely than the former, and tonight more so than ever. Until later...
