Ten ‘Dawgs Poised To Pounce: #8 Brenton Cox

We continue our series focused on Georgia Bulldogs Poised to do big things in 2018 with a freshman who is simply too explosive not to be on this list.

Kirby Smart and his staff scored so many epic recruiting victories in 2018 that it is difficult to say which one was the most spectacular. But if pressed on the subject, I would likely say that Smart’s biggest coup was wrestling outside linebacker Brenton Cox away from Urban Meyer and his Ohio State Buckeyes.

To be sure Cox is a blue chip prospect, rated among the top 25 players in the country as a senior. But it's not just his star power that made Cox’s commitment noteworthy.

Brenton Cox’s flip from the Buckeyes to the ‘Dawgs was big news because, three years ago, it might not have happened. Georgia fans grew accustomed during the Mark Richt era to saying that "you can’t keep every good player from leaving the state.” But apparently, you can.

At this juncture the reason Cox is so noteworthy is that he exemplifies the old adage that there are some players so athletically gifted that you simply cannot keep them off the field. His combination of length, speed, and suddenness from the outside is something you just cannot teach.

As he continues to learn the things you can teach (scheme, situational awareness) I expect Cox to eat up a lot of snaps. My prediction: Cox sees action in at least 13 games this season, accruing 14 total tackles and 2.5 sacks. He’ll then be in the conversation for a starting spot in 2019. Until later...

Go ‘Dawgs!
