Hello From The Future: Andre Seldon

Hello From The Future: Andre Seldon Brian June 22nd, 2018 at 3:34 PM

Michigan's second 2020 commit came quick on the heels of their first, and in a similar situation: a Camp offer to a life-long Michigan fan who pulled the trigger. In Andre Seldon's case it took him a couple of days to make it official, but once the offer was out it was pretty much over.

Seldon is a very different kind of cornerback than the guys Michigan piled into their 2018 class. Those guys are 6'2" fade annihilators to a man; Seldon is listed at 5'9", 160 and might be a little smaller than that. But dude has been in the hip pocket of everyone in camps this spring and put down a couple of 4.3 40s at Michigan's camp, making him hard to overlook even if he's literally easy to overlook.

GURU RATINGS

247 ESPN Rivals Composite
3*, #351 overall
#24 CB, #8 MI
NR 3*, NR overall
#26 CB
3*, #416 overall
#29 CB, #11 MI

Both sites that have ranked Seldon have him in the 3.5 star range. Given his camp performances, which are detailed after the jump, those rankings are conservative early takes based on his size. If he's really 5'9" and grows an inch or two—very possible for rising juniors—he could have significant upward mobility. If he's really 5'7" and not sprouting further his size will put a hard cap on his rankings around about where they are now.

SCOUTING

As you might expect from a super quick but undersized guy, Seldon does work at camps, racking up positional MVPs on the regular despite being a 2020 competing against a bunch of 2019s.. He was the DB MVP of the Elite Georgia Showcase("reminded the camp coaches of current South Carolina DB Jamyest Williams") H.e was the DB MVP of February's "Best of the Midwest" camp. From Steve Wiltfong:

Belleville (Mich.) High 2020 cornerback Andre Seldon ran a pair of sub 4.5 40-yard dashes during the testing portion and come 1-on-1s he didn’t give up much. Cat quick and obviously fast and tenacious, Seldon has all the traits coveted in a nickel defender.

At a regional Rivals camp in Chicago he beat out his 2019 teammate Julian Barnett despite being a 2020:

Barnett had a strong showing that earned him an invitation to the Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge, but he was just edged our for position MVP honors by his sophomore teammate at Belleville, Andre Seldon. Although on the smaller side for cornerback, Seldon plays a physical brand of football and was able to intercept several passes on the day en route to earning top player at his position honors.

Another take from the same event:

He was right in the hip pocket of wide receivers on nearly every route and also showed an ability to press at the line despite weighing less than most of the wide receivers he face during one-on-ones. Despite being an underclassman, Seldon is already very polished technically and has the competitive nature you look for in a lockdown cornerback.

Various reps he took at that camp made it to YouTube; unfortunately they're scattered across a 5-minute video. A bunch do come in a row at the 2:10 mark:

Other camp notes include "lockdown in one on ones" from Cleveland's UA camp and this from Allen Trieu at another Chicago event:

...did well despite dealing with some minor knicks and injuries. He is fast and competitive. He wanted to go against the camp's best and we do not remember him giving up a completion.

Finally, his coach:

"He is a super competitive, highly motivated, true blue Michigan man since the day he walked through the door," Crowell said. "That was his dream school. The kid can run. He's twitchy, one of the twitchiest kids I've ever had the pleasure of coaching -- maybe the most twitchy I've had. Dre's fast, but he's also super quick and changes directions well."

Oh, and one Jourdan Lewis:

"(Andre) is a transcendent talent," Lewis told 247Sports. "He plays a poised, confident and aggressive game. It's partly because of the way (Belleville head coach) Crowell teaches us, but there's also an 'it' factor there with him that you can't teach."

OFFERS

It's still super early for 2020s and Seldon camped specifically for a Michigan "dream offer" so his list isn't real long right now. Syracuse, Kentucky, and Iowa State were trying to get the jump.

HIGH SCHOOL

Belleville is about halfway between Detroit and Ann Arbor and has recently got into the business of having a bunch of touted recruits thanks to new head coach Jermain Crowell.

STATS

Via Trieu:

The speedy Seldon had two interceptions, seven pass breakups, a defensive touchdown and a punt return for a touchdown as a sophomore.

FAKE 40 TIME

Seldon reportedly ran two 4.3 40s at Michigan's camp, which is 4 fakes out of 5. It escapes the fifth because Seldon has put up similar times at camps with neutral observers.

PREDICTION BASED ON FLIMSY EVIDENCE

Seldon is in the vein of Lewis and Levert Hill as the kind of hip-pocket DB who can flip from inside to out with ease, but where those guys were generally listed at 5'11" Seldon is a couple of critical inches shorter. That could be the difference between a useful nickel guy and another national star.

UPSHOT FOR THE REST OF THE CLASS

There's no upshot for 2020 guys just yet.

"Barnett had a strong showing that earned him an invitation to the Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge, but he was just edged our for position MVP honors by his sophomore teammate at Belleville, Andre Seldon"

That's what I like to hear!

Hopefully he can grow an inch or two, but regardless I'm super excited for this kid

On the WTKA Interview with Crowell, he compared Dre favorably to JD and Vert at  similar stages. If he grows a few inches he could be the best of all of them which is a scary thought for our defense. Quickly becoming CB univ.

A "transcendent talent" quote from one of the better Michigan players this century. That's enough for me.

"true blue Michigan man since the day he walked through the door"

That's the stuff!

Let's cut Crowell some slack, he'll get guys that fit and I don't want him to try to encourage those that don't.

I like this kid.  He’s Andre Seldon but fast.

By the look of that camp video, the kid has a knack for knowing when to make a move.  Whether it be slide inside for the pick or smack the arms/hands to stop a catch.  That's impressive.

He reminds me a lot of Lamont Wade. Another twitchy, but small guy who ended up at Penn State. If he grows to say 5'10 or 5'11, I full expect him to be one of the best recruits in the state

This kid can be good. He can move. I mean move like any direction you need and fast. Yeah, he's giving up six to seven inches on some receivers but with those quick and strong hands/arms while knowing where the ball is, there aren't many receivers that can withstand a fierce disruption on their own hands or forearms when that ball arrives. As long as you can jump, know where that ball and your man is at, you can time that disruption pretty much every time and abuse any taller players chance at catching a ball right when it arrives. This kid Seldon is super athletic and he'll have himself in position the majority of the time. I'm guessing he can jump also? If you have that type of speed and you can dunk a basketball or get above the rim, you're set. That's just talking about the deep balls or end zone fades. This guy should be lockdown in the slot indeed and he's tough to help out in run support.

Fast. Quick. Twitchy. Competitive. Great cover skills. The only two things missing: height and ball skills. Lots of PBUs and not many INTs. He can’t make himself taller, but I’m confident his ball skills will improve under Crowell before he arrives at Michigan. GO BLUE!
