Gary Neville has admitted that he has been proved completely wrong about David De Gea after his dramatic improvement at Manchester United since his first arrival at the club.

The Spanish goalkeeper was brought to Old Trafford from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2011 by Sir Alex Ferguson but he struggled at first to adapt to the rigours of English football.

De Gea made a number of high-profile mistakes in his first few months at the club but has since established himself as Manchester United’s number one between the posts.

The Spain international is now regarded as one of the world’s top shot-stoppers following his development at Old Trafford in recent years.

And former Manchester United defender Neville was full of praise for the goalkeeper after he kept another clean sheet in the 4-0 win over Everton at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Speaking on Sky Sports after the game, Neville said: “He’s just become an outstanding goalkeeper.

“You could argue that he’s now the outstanding goalkeeper in the world. He is Manchester United’s world-class player, there is absolutely no doubt.

“I gave him quite a lot of stick when he first came because he was nowhere near it at that point. But he’s grown into someone who is absolutely outstanding.”

Manchester United are currently level on points with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table as they look to win the title for the first time since Ferguson’s retirement back in 2013.

The Red Devils return to Premier League action next weekend with a trip to St Mary’s to take on Southampton.
