Wales Rugby History 1906-1919

Wales National Rugby Union Team represents Wales in international rugby union tournaments. Wales is a country that is part of the United Kingdom in the south-west of the island of Great Britain, bordered by England to its east and the Atlantic Ocean and Irish Sea to its west. But when a Glamorgan XV team, which contained many Welsh caps that were to face South Africa, could only manage a drew against Gloucester in the west of England, it caused some people to re-think the team's chances of winning. This caused an angry outcry for Welsh star, Gwyn Nicholls, to come out of international retirement to face South Africa. South African’s players were also disappointment at not facing Nicholls on the pitch.The South African defeat of Wales was a shock to many critics and ended the international careers of some of the greatest Welsh players of the time. Wales played their first match against Australia on 12 December 1908, defeating Australia by 9-6.


Wales National Rugby Union Team won the Home Nations Championship in 1909 after 1906 Championship.The first-ever Five Nations Championship was first started in 1910,when France joined the Home Nations as the fifth nation. Wales first time won Five Nations Championship in 1911 and took the first official Grand Slam by winning all their matches in the Five Nations. Grand Slam is given to whom who won all their matches in the Five Nations. France were heavily defeated by Wales at St Helens in 1910 by 49-14. Wales' first home loss to one of the Home Nations since 1899 when England's defeat of Wales at Cardiff in 1913 and was the first loss at home to England since 1895.The Great War came in 1914 and rugby was officially stop for the duration.
