Analyzing Carmelo Anthony’s Most Likely Destinations

The drama-filled 2010 NBA off-season is climbing to another level with Carmelo Anthony trade rumors surfacing.  Anthony has already been rumored to be headed to New Jersey, New York, Philly, Golden State, and even the Clippers are in on the action.

Melo commented on his situation in a press conference, “I’m leaving my options open.  I never wanted to be traded.  I never said that.  I’ve been a Nugget for seven years … I’m here man; I’m here today.  Whatever the future holds it holds.”

Chris Broussard reported for ESPN that the proposed Deal is still on the table, but it is not likely that anything will get done between the Nets and the Nuggets.

According to Broussard, here is the deal as of today:

Nets get Carmelo Anthony

Nuggets get Derrick Favors, Andrei Kirilenko, and multiple first round picks

Bobcats get Devin Harris

Jazz get Boris Diaw

The Nets would obviously be winning in this deal, along with the Bobcats who would solve their point guard issue by bringing in a potential star in Harris.  The Jazz would come out about even, giving Kirilenko and receiving Diaw in return.

But let’s get back to the most important man in this deal, Anthony.  This deal was given a 6.5 out of 10 chance of getting done as the Nuggets are reluctant to the pull the trigger, while the rest of the teams are ready to complete the deal.  So what will happen if the Nuggets remain gun shy?  Will they still trade Melo or will he stay in Denver?

I’ll assume they will and analyze the most likely destinations beyond the Nets.

New York Knicks

There were rumors over the summer that Amar’e Stoudemire was recruiting Chris Paul and Anthony to join him in New York City when he signed his massive contract.  Paul then attempted to force the Hornets to trade him, and failed, but he may still bolt to the Knicks and Stoudemire when the opportunity presents itself.  Anthony was rumored to be in the same boat as Paul, and wanted to join the two.  The situation is different for him, because he will be done with the Nuggets after the year is done.

There won’t be much disagreement that if Melo lands with the Knicks they will quickly become one of the most watchable and exciting teams.  Although, with Anthony and Stoudemire, fans will have to wonder how well the team will defend.  The Knicks likely won’t be able to get him through a trade, so if he were to leave for free agency, the chances would become much better.

Golden State Warriors

Stephon Curry has become a bona fide star in one year with the Warriors.  Curry’s elevated status and youth at age 22 makes him a prime return for Anthony, but also makes him impossible to get.  Although the Nuggets were rumored to have offered Anthony for Curry, the Warriors rejected and would rather stick with their current core.  Melo may have fit in well with Monta Ellis, David Lee, Andris Biedrins, and Reggie Williams surrounding him.

Philadelphia 76ers

Denver’s rumored to have always loved Andre Iguodala’s game.  The 76ers contacted the Nuggets about a possible trade that would push Iggy and Melo to the forefront of the deal.  The proposal never made it as far as the discussion stage, but it says something that Denver would even discuss the deal.  More than Iguodala would have to be provided for Philly to land him.  Evan Turner and Anthony may form a dynamic duo in the coming years if Melo somehow does land in Philly.  Their similar styles would complement each other well, and the otherwise dull offense would come alive with the added production.
