Galaxy acquire rights to goalkeeper David Bingham

The Los Angeles Galaxy have acquired 28-year-old goalkeeper David Bingham’s right of first refusal from the San Jose Earthquakes in exchange for $100,000 in General Allocation Money and $100,000 in Targeted Allocation Money, the club announced.

Assuming they can sign him, the talented Bingham would fill an immediate need for the Galaxy, as the club parted ways last week with keeper Brian Rowe.

The 2016 MLS All-Star selection has played seven seasons with the San Jose Earthquakes, making 95 starts and accruing 27 shutouts and 288 total saves while earning a 1.24 goals-against average throughout his career, the seventh-best among any active goalkeeper in Major League Soccer.

Bingham signed with MLS as a Generation adidas player following the 2011 MLS SuperDraft before landing in San Jose after a weighted lottery on Jan. 26, 2011. He spent a brief period on loan with Norwegian side Strømmen IF in 2014 before earning a starting position with the Earthquakes in 2015.

In two consecutive seasons, Bingham started all 34 games in net for San Jose, finishing both years among the league’s best in various categories. In 2015, he broke Pat Onstad’s club record with 12 shutouts in a single-season and earned MLS All-Star honors in 2016.

Internationally, Bingham has earned three caps with the U.S. Men’s National Team, making his debut in a 1-0 shutout victory over Canada on Feb. 6, 2016 at StubHub Center. He also made appearances in friendly contests against New Zealand and Jamaica.
