Steelers owner Dan Rooney has passed away

Dan Rooney has passed away.

On Thursday, the Steelers broke the news on their Twitter handle, as the second owner in franchise history has died. He was 84 years old.

The son of Steelers founder Art Rooney, Dan Rooney was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2000.

Rooney was born in 1932, the year before his father founded the Pittsburgh Pirates, who later be re-named to the Steelers. Rooney joined the family business shortly after graduating from Duquesne, as he persuaded his father to hire Chuck Noll in 1969. He became the team’s present in 1975, a post he would serve until 2002. His son, Art Rooney II, is currently the president of the Steelers.

Rooney played a hand in all six of the Steelers Super Bowl rings, as the city of Pittsburgh — and the NFL universe — mourns the loss of a football legend.
