2018 NFL Opening Night, Best Young Quarterbacks to Build your team around

Analyzed Sports | S. K. Patrick

There’s no question that to compete on the highest level in the NFL you need an elite quarterback in today’s NFL. These quarterbacks are primed to ascend the league hierarchy at their respective positions as Hall of Fame QB Tom Brady, Drew Brees,  Ben Roethlisberger and Eli Manning enter the twilight of the careers. In today’s era of team-friendly Rookie deals, acquiring a young star quarterback is imperative. Not only does the QB make an impact himself, but the money the team saves on the first contract helps to surround the young QB with playmakers. Here is a look at the best young quarterbacks in the league.

Carson Wentz, Philadelphia Eagles

The Super Bowl champions Philadelphia Eagles have a superstar in Carson Wentz. Wentz made a significant sophomore leap, cutting his interceptions in half and doubling his passing touchdowns from his first year in the league. An ACL and LCL in Week 14 put a halt to an MVP campaign. Wentz would’ve added to his 33 scores through the air before the injury. He earned his first Pro Bowl invite.

Wentz performance was even more impressive due to the fact that he had a monster season with no 1,000-yard rusher or receiver. Don’t let that fool you because the Eagles were so talented they didn’t rely on one playmaker. The Eagles recorded nine rushing touchdowns and 38 passing scores. Assuming the North Dakota State alumni returns to his 2017-2018 form, he should finish the 2018 season as one of the top players at the position.

Jared Goff, Los Angeles Rams

In Goff’s first year it seemed like he would be a bust. That shows how much coaching and the right system matters. Unlike Wentz, Goff played in an offense that featured a premier running back. Nonetheless, the balanced attack helped the QB make major strides between his rookie and sophomore years. He went from a disappointment to leading the league in yards gained per pass completion with 12.9 yards.

This year the offense should be in top 5. The front office added wideout Brandin Cooks, who’s has posted three consecutive 1,000-yard receiving seasons. With the talent and in Sean Mcvay offense he’ll crack 30 touchdowns and 4,000 yards for the first time in his career.

Deshaun Watson, Texans

Watson was a superstar at Clemson and he was a superstar in his first year in the NFL. He’s similar to Robert Griffin coming out of college. He can throw from the pocket, he can throw on the run and compete at a high level against NFL talent in the ACC and Alabama in the championship game. A torn ACL robbed Watson of a full rookie season, but he was putting up MVP numbers while leading the Texans to a winning record. Rookie records include the longest streak of games with three or more touchdown passes by a rookie (4), most touchdown passes by a rookie in a single game (5) , and most touchdown passes by a rookie in a half (4).
