After ten seasons in Championship, Nottingham Forest finally showed some ambition. They have a proven manager; they’ve spent big money on the right transfers so they can finally start competing for a promotion. In leagues like Championship spending a big money on players can make a big difference, it’s not just that better players can boost confidence to the whole team, but what matters the most is that not too many clubs can afford to spend such amount of money and compete with you. Wolves managed to finish first in Championship last season after spending a big money on mostly young and promising Portuguese players. Nottingham Forest is doing the same now, and although this season hasn’t started yet, the obvious question will be, is Nottingham Forest becoming the new Wolves?

Nottingham Forest had the best transfer window in Championship?

While most of the clubs are getting players from top 6 Premier League teams on loan, Nottingham Forest is spending big to improve their team in every position. They’ve managed to sign Benfica’s Joao Carvalho for a club-record of £13.2m, while his team-mate Diogo Goncalves signed a season-long loan deal. So far they improved their attack with signing Hillal Soudani from Croatian side Dinamo Zagreb and they’ve got a proven Championship striker Lewis Grabban who scored 20 goals last season for Sunderland and Aston Villa. Lewis Grabban joined Forest from Bournemouth for an undisclosed fee of something around £6m. They are also strongly connected to the Benfica’s goalkeeper Bruno Varela, 23-year-old would cost them something around £13m and he would be a big addition to their team. Other than Middlesbrough, it seems that Nottingham Forest made some of the best moves in this transfer window so far.

Is Aitor Karanka good enough to get them a promotion?

We all know that Aitor Karanka managed to get Middlesbrough promoted to Premier League a few seasons before, but can he do that again with Nottingham Forest? I believe that he absolutely can! Defensive football with a strong side is not always a bad thing, Aston Villa did great last season, and so did Wolves with a similar style of football that Karanka is playing. The big signings he made so far are showing a big ambition from the club, and it’s obvious that Aitor Karanka will try to chase a promotion once again. What’s important is that he has a complete team; they have improved their squad in all positions and they can easily rely on their defence now that they have a proven Championship striker to wait for those long balls from a counter.

Is Championship becoming a bigger league?

What makes Nottingham Forest so similar to the Wolves is the fact that they have followed example set by Wolves. Spending big on young and promising players and making a Premier League side even before you’ve got promoted to the Premier League is something that may become a trend in Championship if Nottingham Forest manage to do the same as Wolves. Spending big is something that is becoming a big factor in football today, but with more big names and promising young players signing for the Championship clubs, it is certain that Championship is becoming a much bigger league.
