Jose’s United do not look like Manchester United. It is a team built to pick up points

This is not the Manchester United that inspires football fans. This is not the Manchester United that creates a fan base. It’s Jose Mourinho’s United, a side which looks a bit like a team that is scared to play with the ball and go forward. Today’s Manchester United plays pragmatic football for the sole purpose of picking up points. It doesn’t entertain and at the end of the day, it will lose against any team who is built to play attacking football.

This was exactly what happened on Sunday evening. United could have equalized and drawn their home fixture against their city rivals but they never looked like a team who could win it.

The only players in Manchester United’s starting eleven, who looked like they cared about the result and were capable of making the difference, were Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford. Both young Englishmen are home-grown players who came through the Red Devils’ academy; not expensive mercenaries, incapable of understanding what Manchester United is about.

During the 80s, If Manchester United had the same team who played against Manchester City on Sunday evening and were managed by a manager like Mourinho, they would have never become the big club they are now.

I don’t see today’s Jose’s Man United capable of winning two Champions League titles and dominating the Premier League for two decades. Jose’s players don’t have the passion and the mentality to win titles. Look at their main Number 9 striker – Romelu Lukaku. He is a good striker and good finisher by today’s football standards. However, he is nowhere near Mark Hughes, Eric Cantona, Teddy Sheringham, Andy Cole, Ryan Giggs, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Cristiano Ronaldo or Wayne Rooney’s standards.

Lukaku is just one example of a team that would have never become the infamous Manchester United side, had the club have played under Jose Mourinho back in the 80s, and had adopted their current playing philosophy.

I understand that Jose Mourinho is a very successful manager but the best step Man United can take now is to recruit someone else, someone who will bring the right players that the club needs and can adopt the right playing style, which for the Red Devils is to play entertaining football with a high tempo.

At the moment, it simply looks as if Mourinho is focused on picking up a point at home against their major title rivals than looking to actually play entertaining football and win the game. That is not the characteristic of a typical Manchester United side.
