The Journey Through The ASA National Plan Awards

The National Plan Stages 1 to 7 succeeds the Duckling Awards and I can Awards.  The framework of the National plan is designed to develop aquatic skills as opposed to teaching children to swim up and down length after length compounding bad technique.

Each stage has a set number of outcomes to be achieved and as the children progress through the stages a tool box of aquatic skills is acquired.  It is this tool box of aquatic skills that is essential part of swimming development as it provides the individual with key skills to draw from to become proficient in all four strokes.  Additionally, it also keeps interest levels engaged as children are given the opportunity to experiment with different skills as they continually revisit, develop and refine.

This point can be explained in more detail by using an example.  In the example below, an aquatic skill (objective) ‘push and glide’ taken from the National Plan curriculum is used to demonstrate the point.

Aquatic Skill – Push and glide

‘Push and Glide’ Stage 1

Stage 1 – “push and glide in a horizontal position to or from the wall” buoyancy aids can be used to assist.

‘Push and Glide’ Stage 6

Stage 6 – “sink push off on side from the wall, glide, kick and rotate into Front Crawl.”

The aquatic skill (objective) remains the same ‘push and glide’ but it has been developed and refined from Stage 1 ‘basic idea of movement’ through to Stage 6 ‘a highly complex skill!’   We believe this teaching style should be implemented when teaching a range of aquatic skills to both reinforce and refine the skills over a period of time.

Planning and Assessment

As every child is unique we use ongoing assessment as our preferred model to monitor children’s progress and achievements.  This method allows for flexibility and a specific skill can be adapted as necessary to cater for specific individual needs.  Regular assessment is ongoing so that achievements can be recorded and appropriate certificates issued at the correct time.  Formative assessment also assists with setting individual targets, again reinforcing each child’s needs.
