Divisive Arsenal star defended by former teammate

Mesut Ozil has come under fire for his performances this season but one of his former teammates has jumped to his defence.

The German Zidane has been a topic of splitting opinion since his move to Arsenal. The playmaker was the focal point of criticism during the World Cup. He remains a divisive figure at Emirates. However, his former teammate, Thomas Rosicky has a reply to those who quickly criticize by saying he’s a proven match winner. He further said Ozil is “not the one who is not working”. Mesut Ozil has been questioned many times during his spell at Arsenal.

A World Cup winner with Germany, Ozil has displayed creative qualities that helped Arsenal win F.A Cup twice. However, his supposed lack of aggression and not tracking back has garnered more criticism than applause. Thomas Rosicky who spent three seasons with Ozil defended him. He told Daily Mail, “I know Mesut very well. I played a lot of games with him. If you always see his stats, he is not the one who is not working. Obviously what the people maybe lack with him. Mainly in England, is that he is not the one who is going into the tackles or something like that.”

“But if you see it in general – he is working hard. You can see his stats, what he has every game. Obviously, I don’t know about this season [as I am not playing or training with him], but that’s what he used to be like and he was a hard worker – even in training. I know him. You have to see things in perspective, he is someone who can decide the game by himself.”

Rosicky also said Ozil shouldn’t be blamed for Arsenal’s struggle in past few years. Rosicky believes Arsenal can get the best out of Ozil after the German’s decision to retire from international duty. He said, “I think he will still be a key player for Arsenal and, if he is playing well, Arsenal will be playing well.” Ozil will be in action as Arsenal host Everton on Sunday.

Author’s take:

Ozil has been at the receiving end of unfair criticism. He has been the most dedicated player on the pitch in his department when you look at statistics. However, his recent performance against Cardiff and Newcastle has shown why he is one of the best-attacking midfielders.
