Arsenal outcast given new lease of life in an unfamiliar position by Emery

Unai Emery has started working his magic on the field after an impressive transfer window for the Gunners

The Spaniard was appointed as Wenger’s replacement to usher in a new era at the club that has stagnated over the past decade. There are already signs that Emery is meeting this challenge head-on. The entire backroom staff of Arsenal has already been changed while there was also a marked improvement in their recruitment this summer. They did their business early and efficiently. However, Emery has a better reputation as a coach than as a manager. During his in time in Spain, with Valencia and Sevilla, he proved that he was able to get the best out of players at his disposal.

The Gunners tied several players to new contracts this summer including one Calum Chambers. The Englishman has floundered since his move to the Emirates. But it seems that Emery is willing the youngster another chance to prove his worth – and this time in a new position.

In their 8-0 friendly win over Boreham Wood, Chambers played as a No.6 and confessed that he could see himself in that role long term. He said:

“It’s a new one for me. I played a little bit there growing up. It’s a position I feel like I can grow to enjoy and out there today I felt good, I just need to train and practice in games in that position to get comfortable.”

“It’s an important position. If you can get on the ball, turn and break their lines then it kills their press, so I think it’s an important position and anyone who’s playing in there needs to learn how to do that.”

“‘Obviously you can’t do it all the time, you can’t take risks and when it’s not on you can bounce it backwards at an angle for someone else to play through the lines.”

“But if you can get on it and you have time and it’s not a risk, turn and play forward and that’s the best way to get through a press.”

After their lone friendly, Arsenal now travel to Singapore to participate in the International Champions Cup. There they will face much sterner tests in Atletico Madrid and Emery’s former club Paris Saint-Germain.

Author’s Take

Arsenal have already signed Lucas Torreira to play as their chief destroyer for the upcoming season. However, they still are being linked with Steven N’Zonzi and Ever Banega which shows that Emery might be in for another central midfielder before the season begins. If Calum Chambers can successfully be converted into a central defensive midfielder then it will save the club some bucks while also reviving a flailing career.
